No. 11 caps on muskets?

Hello the camp!

Has anyone used No. 11 percussion caps on muskets?  (After changing nipples of course.)  If so, how did it work?  I'm asking because it seems to be far easier to find No. 11 caps than good quality musket caps.

I still use winged musket caps on my 3 muskets, but a friend of mine has pulled his musket nipple
and is using the #11 size musket nipple. He has no hang fires nor miss fires. Many shooters have
gone to #11 musket nipple due to either high cost or availability of them.

Thank you!  I'm new to the black powder rifle game (I've shot cap and ball revolvers since I was sixteen), and it seems the musket caps are increasingly hard to find.  (At least quality versions.)  I would think a good rifle capper would be useful with the smaller caps.

The best source of supply for musket caps is order a package of them from a supplier who sells to skirmishers. Like the North/South Skirmish Assn. I think there is a list of suppliers on their web page. You wiill have to pay the Hazzmat Fee for shipping them UPS, but unless you live near a source supply house you can spend that much or more driving there.  I live near Kansas City so a trip to James Country Merchantile is a no problem source.

I like the hotter CCI Musket caps, which may no longer be available. CCI now makes re-enactor musket caps which are more user friendly to those who cannot wear safety glasses in the field.  You will also find musket caps available (thru sutlers row) at most
Civil War re-enactments.

The #11 sized musket nipple may or may not work with the CW era breech loading  carbines. A Sharps carbine can have ignition issues with musket caps.

Yes I personnaly utilize a flat drum #11 brass capping device, unless I am shooting a Remington Revolver.

Considering the 'new' low powered CCI "reenacter" musket caps... one might best think in terms of using # 11 pistol caps on a Nipple/Cone set up for this purpose.
Not all Rifle Muskets will accommodate this nipple/cone alteration to the smaller percussion caps.
Just a thought on my part,

I just scored three hundred of the old CCI musket caps from a local sporting goods place that's selling out their hunting stuff.  I think I paid about $4 per hundred.  (I would have bought thousands if they had them.)  No. 11's just seem easier to find when I'm looking online.  I don't intend to shoot any of the breech loading carbines so that shouldn't be a problem.

Here ya go pilgrim,
I just received one thousand musket caps from The Gun Works in Oregon.  I suggest that you go for the German caps, as they are the hottest.  Price was around $107.00 including shipping.
Things are starting to get tight in the muzzle loading area.  Not a good idea to run out.  Lead is also on the rise. >:(

Sure ope this helps.
