StrawHat

How do you plan on completing it?  True to the original or as a sporter version?  Or maybe a long range rifle?  I installed an 1866 into the lock and stock of a Mississippi Rifle to create a decent shooting rifle, non historical but accurate enough for me.
Knowledge is to be shared not hoarded.

im thinking at going back to original with it. i been side tracked here lately with a horse ride to colorado so this project is getting a later start than planned

You are riding from Louisiana to Colorado?  Way cool.

Better hurry with that ride. We've been having unseasonably WARM weather along the Front Range (Ft. Collins to Pueblo), and one of my dogs has been growing her fur out more than I recall in past Fall seasons! Plus it's been getting cooler the last day or so. Ya never know... Don't like Colorado weather? Wait a minute, it'll change.  (Just had the insurance adjuster here, looking at my roof from the hail damage on Sept. 29th.)  ::)
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

Yesterday I noticed that there a lot of the parts you're going to need on E-bay. Several stocks and a breech block or 2.

labor of love X2

Let yourself off the time schedule. If my own experience is any measure you are going to love what you get
by taking your time than by rushing the project. Personally, I'm pretty envious of the fun you are going to have playing with something you built yourself. Best of Luck....

still aint had the extra funds to get this labor of love started yet. but it aint going no wheres. so i got nothing but time. one concern i have and i hope to find some experience here, is the rear site screws to the barrel.  on mine i have both screws but the front screw has been unscrewed from the barrel. my concern is the screw head is flat, with no way of tightning that i know of. i seem to remember a post once upon a time about a spanner wrench or some kind of tool just for this. can any one shed some light on this?

I don't recall the reference for certain ( I think it was JS & Pat Wolf's book) but what you have to do is to drill an undersized hole in the jaws of a pair of vice-grips right where they come together. Line the sides of the hole with masking tape and clamp that over the screw head.

Billy are you coming to the convention in Missouri? If so I'll bring my box of left over Trapdoor parts from my project rifle. For sure I have a hammer screw that might work for you.

buckskin billy

thanks but i wont be making it to the conventions

Don't forget to get a Proxy to vote for you at the Congress meeting, Mr. Senator!

I too must forgo the convention.
To add to my sadness,Saturday I dropped by my Friendly FFL , you never know what you'll find consigned  :-\

This day however, gloom in the form of an 1885 Springfield rifle... so much butchery must have been Myron von Frankenstein
or should read Moron.

The rifle was cut chopped to carbine length, crudely crowned and some kinda ramp sight applied.
Moving back the correct Buffington rear sight , but not the correct guarded barrel band.
The stock itself has been sanded, looks like he quit at 150 grit and he sanded the cartouche to an unreadable depression.
The Hammer, either was cut of broken off , and "ol' Myron welded a straight thumb pull to replace it , and scraped a file across it to form a crude XX, the weld is barely dressed  and a bright incorrect hammer screw completes the butchery ...  ::)
The butt plate, is made from thin sheet metal ... :o

Some wag brought it in for an appraisal, claims it's been the family a long time...  shameful...
Anthony asked my my thoughts ....
I told him, junk ...sadly junk  maybe the action & the lock plate were worth saving , the rest buried  :(
when planets align...do the deal !
