Non-CAS, but important this time of year

Folks, I'd just like to pass along a general safety message about the colder months.  We use heating devices; furnace, stoves, portable heaters and the like in the winter months.  Some folks still use old style heat lamps for various reasons.  If you didn't know, I am a professional fireman.  Have been for 22 years; the first 20 active duty Air Force, the last 2 in the federal system.  We had a 2 alarm fire today with a total loss of the home and several pets.  Apparently the occupants had a heat lamp on an enclosed porch for 4 dogs and 4 cats; all lost in this fire.  My engine was first on scene within about 2 minutes of being alerted.  This is what I snapped after I engaged the pump and was flowing to the guys on the hoseline.  Just take a moment to check around your home on a regular basis for fire hazards.

General, great suggestion.

Question:  1990 was fire school still at Greenville Air Force Base?

No sir, the fire academy was at Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Illinois from 1965-1993.  I went through there in Feb of 1990, then was assigned to the base fire dept.  When Chanute closed in 1993 the academy moved to its current home; Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Texas.

I might have been one of the last if not the last class through at Greenville.  Went through in July of 64.

I fought mountain fires when i was a youngin 17-18 chopped alot of line did alot of mop ups for day and nights at a time.I was so tired one evening i reared back spread eagle on top of a tanker where i had eatin mre,s to rest my eyes woke up the next mornin right there :o

Good info and i just had the fire dept out to my house to check my alarms..I live just below the Sequoias and i can always spot smoke since then and have called in a few.Always once a year or so check with your insurance company for any changes if there were any.

Fire crew once told me if your wired alarms are or were dirty they may not cover you,how true that is i don't know, but the times in which we live might be something to check out.The guys that came out this time were surprised mine didn't have any battery back up..I'll be checkin that info tommorrow.

Thanks for the heads up and for being there~ :)

Fire freaks me out.  I just cannot imagine losing everything to a fire and my dog and cats...

We put a new stove in the cabin this year and haven't used it but a couple of times.  We got ready to leave Sunday to go to a gathering and was going to leave the dog there.  We closed the stove down and was getting ready to go and a down draft or something blew the fire out in the stove.  It made a "pouff" sound and it was like something fell down the flue but the was nothing in there to fall down.  Anyway we opened it back up a little and got it burning again and made sure that it was ok but I was afraid to leave the dog there after that.  He hung out in the truck with no problems.

I just want folks to remain cognizant of the dangers around us everyday.  My wife gets irritated with me when we're going away for a few days because I have to make about 5 checks around the house before we leave.  Just don't like seeing folks suffer.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
