Historically the 'Official' NCOWS logo was first created/made by an NCOWS member from Des Moines, Iowa. An active member then, he also wrote articles on using period firearms for hunting wild game in Iowa. As I recall, his design was not copyrighted or trademarked by the org at that time but the concept was brought up as a potential long-term problem if it was not.
The same logic applies to the existing org flag, made by a former NCOWS Judges mother-in-law.
What with the ease of filing a law suit today it is potentially possible and probable that the existing logo and flag could be copyrighted and/or trademarked by an individual that is not a member thusly leaving the org without either. Although unlikely, it is still possible.
Therefore, I strongly suggest that the existing logo and flag design be approved, copyrighted and trademarked by the Exec. Comm. and Congress before going any further with the search for a maker of flags, it is that important.
Now, if this has already been proposed and completed, I happily withdraw any further suggestions or considerations, but the urge to acquire a flag does not merit the suddeness that we are presently seeing here, albeit done in true love for the org and from the heart of all those participating on this thread. In addition, the onset of both Fall and Winter holidays requires an output of funds that make it much more necessary to delay the entire process until it gets complete approval and assigned to a committee for the research and acquisition.
Again, if this process has already started, go forward, if not then please reconsider in order to not jump into a potential problem area.

I'm currently waiting for the sixth confirmation.  Once I have that and the funds, I will order the flags as previously agreed.

Ol Gabe is thinking right.  I have opened the discussion with the EC regarding a copyright on the logo, which I think would be covering about anything it would be printed, embroidered, imaged, etc. on.  I'm thinking we should give this some time to see about the copyright issue before we go further.  That's my 2 cents...

Nope.... you were sent the Logo as part of your membership package.

A few reasons:

A clothing manufactuer could start selling shirts with our logo.

"Henry" Repeating Arms could sell a rifle with our logo on it.

We would have no control over this and no way to have a say in the application of the logo.  We would have no way to recover any profit on it's use either.

As things work, the copyright is owned by the creator.  We are looking into whether the creator has assigned those rights to the organization.  The idea here is two-fold.  Make sure that NCOWS has rights to the image is first.  Then it is make sure that the copyrighted image is used in making anything else.  I think there is probably no real problem with either.  However, we are just trying to get our ducks in a row.

Regarding the flag, Johnson County Rangers will probably not meet and may not be able to make an official commitment until the December meeting. It has been mentioned but I'm not sure just a few members can't make that decision.

Personally I agree with others on the Logo copyright.
