One hundred years ago today, Clara Barton died, leaving behind an enormous legacy. This "Battlefield Angel" worked on the front lines of the Civil War to tend injured soldiers and maintain Army hospitals. She went on to found the American Red Cross, now one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the U.S.

We salute this altruistic giant today with a special photo gallery featuring pictures of Clara Barton, images from her life, vintage Red Cross memorabilia, and more.

I am convinced that I was born 100 years too late.

Not me, I would have been born 1846 and would have fought for the South ... Bottom line, I would not have lived to be 21.  That means 45 years less of drinking, fighting and womanizing.  ;D
