Where would I find one, pards?

Edit: I also see a dog's head buckle in a different style on page 93 of Cowboys & Trappings...

Probably at S&S Firearms - or Dixie.

The same supplier provides both firms with them.

There were a couple of sizes - the smaller one was for more of a web 'utility' belt, while the larger is most closely associated with bird hunting - and both buckles' time frames seem to be post-1910.

Thanks, St. George.
Really that late? I'm disappointed...

The Mills belt buckles and belt plates were/are widely faked.

You'll see them for the 7th Cavalry and for the Balloon Corps as well as major gun companies and prisons, and they date from the latter 1960's, when they flooded the guns shows and flea markets with them, as suppliers in England discovered America's love of all things old.

Now, they've aged, and look pretty good.

Fortunately, the Dog's Head was popular, and with a bit of digging - you can find a real one, from time to time.

Thanks again.
I see on page 170 of PI that there's a dog-head buckle which is put in the 1885-1895 period and the photo I mentioned in 'Trappings' is dated c1895 - so they seem to be just in our period.
