Sharps Lever Pin Question
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:43:34 PM »
I don’t have a great deal of experience with Sharps rifles, but I recently bought a used Pedersoli Sharps.  The lever pin seems awfully tight.  If I really work at it, I can get it out with my fingers, but I have to have the gun on a solid surface and use a plastic mallet to get it back in.  Even then, I’m afraid that I’m going to damage the pin.  I have made certain that the parts are in alignment, so that isn’t the issue.  I’ve also greased the pin.  The lever seems to work smoothly and there is no binding when the pin is in place, but I wanted to make sure that the tightness is normal.

Thanks.

You need it to be tight.

Just keep using the plastic mallet and maybe a nylon drift punch and you'll be fine, and so will the pin.

Good Luck!

I agree with St. George . Both mine started tight and got better .

Two things you can do to properly dissasemble your sharps.
1. lower the breechblock slightly and find the spot where it's not camming against the pin.
2. Take the forearm off and loosen the lever spring so that it's not putting tension against the breechblock and pin.

You should be able to easily pull that pin out by hand.

Thanks.  I'll give that a try.  I don't like having to force it.

Also thanks for not scolding me for failing to hold out for an American Sharps  ;)

That made a world of difference.  It also gave me a chance to clean and lightly grease the lever spring, which made the lever operate much more smoothly.  Thanks again!
