I'm not smart enough to think of this on my own, so I'll give credit to an unknown shooter over on The High Road:

If the dropping lever bothers you, take the damn thing off!  It's only one screw.

Ever since I learned that little trick I've never had a problem with the lever falling under recoil! ;D
