We're shooting E.M.F's replica of an 1892 Winchester. The rifle is produced by Rossi in Brazil. I'm shooting .44-40 ammo loaded with black powder.

I always was under the impression that the shift to the '73s was due to the advent of the short stroke kits creating a faster gun for 10 shot strings. If I remember, the early SASS "gamer gun" (late 1980s to early to mid 1990s) was a slicked up '92 Short Rifle  that the top shooters used. The heavier octagon barrel stayed on target better than the carbine model. Once the '73s became a faster action the '92s got dropped and it's been the '73 all the way. I wonder if a short stroke kit could be designed for the 92s whether they would  get back their former popularity? I would bet yes. I hardly ever get a stovepipe but sometimes fail to completely jack the lever all the way and get a misfeed. I like my two 92s due to familiarity and I'm just plain too cheap to get a slicked up '73. Also, when I see a rapid fire top '73 shooter merely flicking their fingers to work the lever and with their thumb on the side of the stock, it just doesn't look "cowboy". If I were a "contender" it might be a different story but with a spring kit and at half the cost of a '73, the '92s are a nice slick little rifle.
