About three years ago at Winter Range I got one of Taylor's (Chiappa) Spencer carbines in 45 Colt.  It was always "cranky" about feeding the last round from the magazine, requiring anywhere from five to ten seconds of fiddling the lever to get it to finally feed and chamber. I tried a stronger magazine spring but that only made it worse.  Last weekend at Hell on Wheels I gave the rifle to Lonnie at Run-N-Iron and he got it working for me.  He worked on the cartridge keeper lever (the fork shaped piece at the back of the receiver) and adjusted it so that the rifle now feeds every round slick as you like.  I don't see that many Spencers at SASS matches so I have no idea how wide spread the problem may be, but it is very nice to have it solved and to be able to pass on a bit of (hopefully) helpful information.

Sagebrush,

Can you detail insome way the modifications that were made to the cartridge keeper lever.  Do you have contact info for Lonnie at Run-N-Iron?

Thanks for the post.

This problem is caused by the cartridge guide spring tension being to weak, the desighn of the new AS Spencer with the pin and coil spring seems to more of a problem in this reguard, the original leaf spring on the originals and the early AS Spencers is much less of a problem.I changed the pin and coil spring for a original type ,but this takes machinery that most people do not have lying around

Run-N-Iron is in Bertrand, NE.  The web site is at:  http://www.runniron.com.  It was a matter of getting the proper spring tension.
