I asked this question in the gunsmithing forum, but I got no answers, so I thought that I'd try here. What I want to end up with is a DNEG, (a Damn Near Elephant Gun) that can also shoot black powder cartridges. Here are my thoughts or brain farts depending on how you look at it. A 45-70 in a modern bolt action or Ruger falling block action can be loaded up to about 50,000 PSI of chamber pressure safely. That will give a 400 grain bullet a muzzle velocity of about 2200 FPS and a muzzle energy of about 4,000 FP. Now that ought to knock a prairie dog on his keester! Also the 45-90 Express, a modern loading of the 45-90 cartridge using smokeless powder will do the same at about 45,000+ PSI. The 45-70 chamber can very easily be reamed out to 45-90. A first glance choice is the Ruger #1 action, but How do you mount a tang sight on the Ruger #1 action? The Ruger action I would want to rebarrel with about a 28-30" tapered octagonal barrel. After all, I can't go out and play Quigley with a stock issue Ruger #1, but at what twist rate? What would be a good compromise between the 400 -500 grain lead bullet at 1200 to 1500 FPS out of the Black powder loading and the 400-450 grain jacketed bullet at 2,200 FPS out of the smokeless loading? and finally, if not the #1 action, which of the available 45-70 actions will stand up tothe 50,000+ PSI of the smokeless round?
I will no longer respond to the rants of the small minded that want to sling mud rather than discuss in an adult manner.
