A hybrid cartridge

This is what happens when you have too much time on your hands.

I have several Rossi 92`s, and they all blow a lot of trash into the action with BP. One of them is a .44 mag, and I was wondering, bear with me now, if it`s chamber could be reamed with a .44/40 reamer. This  looks like it would add a taper to the shell thus sealing it. I realize, brass would be a concern, but I was dreaming it could be fire formed. It would use .429 bullets, which most of the new one do anyhow.

Let me know if I am crazy, so I don`t pursue it.

There are a couple of problems.  The body of the 44WCF is larger in diameter than the .44RM  (DD calls it the "extra long Russian"!). If that were the end of it, OK, but its not. The neck of the 44WCF is smaller than the 44RM.  Won't work without rebarreling, shortening & rechambering, or drilling out the chamber for a new chamber section to be chambered for  44WCF.

Get another '92 in 44WCF.  Or suck it up.

My sons Browning 92 in 44RM works just fine with BP. And DD loves his AND his Big-Lube bullets!

P.S;  Did I get it wrong ???  Is what you want to do is neck a .45 Colt case down to 44?  Maybe, but you will still have the problem of thick brass at the neck.  How much $$$$ for how much 8) 8) 8) 8), and doubtful benefit.

WildMan, what process do you use to anneal (at the neck only I assume)the brass?

Capt. Augustus

I was not trying to get a .44-40 out of it. Looking at the drawings of the two cases, the .44-40  is the same diameter as the .44 mag at the point that the first taper ends. The object was a hybrid cartridge. It would seem easier than tapering a .45 case to .44. Oh well, too much time.
