... And I personally can attest to the great taste of that 2007 Buck that Jed took with that handgun!

I was going through some older reloading notes the other day and came across a penetration test that I did in the 45 Colt with 3 different 45 Colt bullets. Interestingly, the 454190 Colt bullet penetrated no deeper than bullets with a wider front end (meplat)similar to the PRS "Big Lube". Unfortunately, I did not have the PRS mold at the time or I would have tested it as well.

I would certainly expect that the penetration and performance on game would be equal to the Keith or LBT bullets, for which  there have been excellent harvesting results reported.

firearm: .45 Colt Ruger
muzzle velocity: 920 f.p.s.
Test medium: wet newspaper
Distance to test medium: 25 yards

bullets: made from air cooled wheel weights + 2% tin.......12 BHN

454190 - meplat .20" - 17" penetration - bullet was found turned at about a 45 degree angle.

454424* - meplat .33" - 18" penetration - bullet pretty straight after penetration
*Keith bullet

260 LBT- meplat .36" - 18 1/2" penetration - bullet pretty straight after penetration

Nuther buck season's comin' soon.  I'll see if I can get lucky and get one with my B92 and take some pictures.  Pictures of both the dead deer and the recovered bullet if possible.  I may have a go at takin' one with my Remington roller 45-70 too.

I use a powder compression die that allows me to finger seat the bullet to the desired depth. I compress the powder in stages until it is the right height for the bullet crimp grove or the appropriate bullet depth. This method does not cause distortion of soft lead bullets by seating dies.

I guess I'd have to wrap it up by saying that big and slow really does the job.  It kills promptly, given good placement, and there's not a lot of ruined bloodshot meat.

Whatever you choose for hunting, the goal is the same.  A prompt humane kill.  Minimum tissue damage is a plus.  Following a blood trail for days is a minus.

It's sure fun to score for the table using ammo like grampa usta use.

P.S.  Had a nice doe with her two little spotted fawns on the south lawn this morning.  Enjoyed watching them while eating breakfast.  Made those venison breakfast links taste especially good.
