I'm thinking of buying an 1858 Remington Percussion Revolver. Should I lean towards a Pietta or Uberti?

Many thanks for your input.

This is like Ford vs. Chevy ;)

I like the placement of the grip screw on the Pietta better.
Some say the Pietta is "larger" than an original, but Walt Kirst and I did a comparison on Saturday with some of my originals and I'll tell you. If there is any difference it may be that the "girth" of the grip is slightly larger (more hand filling) and that is easy enough to re-profile to your taste.

Since CNC technology has taken over the new Piettas are as nce as one could ask for.
Ubertis have dovetailed front sights and rammer catches, while not historically correct many think that makes changing or repairing "better" but I never repair either.....

I work on both but the number of Piettas vs. Ubertis seems to be 10 to one in the shop!

+1 to what Hoof Hearted said.  The new Pietta's are very nice and a heck of a bargain when Cabellas has them on sale.

Just get a pietta they are cheaper. Buy them at Cabelas when they are on sale. ;)

The biggest plus of all for Pietta is that Cabellas runs the spare cylinders on sale frequently at good prices.  The logistics do not get any better than loading enough cylinders at home tonight to shoot a whole match tomorrow.

Many thanks for the input Gents. I'll be picking up a Pietta at Cabella's ASAP.

I think you will be happy with the Pietta. I got lucky and picked up a couple of the 5-1/2" barrel versions when they were on sale at Cabela's for $179.00.....During that same time, I also picked up an 8" from a member on another gun board for $185.00 (Which included a holster and shipping).....They are addicting!

I was able to buy an exceptional slightly used Pietta 1858 Remington from a Cas City member. It is very smooth right out of the box and it fits perfectly into one of my Holsters. Can't wait to shoot it.

I started with a Pietta cuz it was on sale for cheap and I wuz just lookin' fur my first ever "Western Single Action" . . . . and so have continued with mostly Piettas.   Have lots of spare cylinders. . . . some from Cabelas and some bought used.   All my Piettas bot used.  Some slick and shootable . . . others needed a little "tweeking" . . . I'm happy with 'em.

Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Have you got to shoot it yet?  Sure looks good in that holster.

Howdy TW,

Just got some more Goex and a couple boxes of balls. Hope to shoot it this coming Friday.

Hi All!

A bit new around here but thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. I bought a new Pietta from Cabela's and just shot it first time about 15 mins ago! WooHoo! Its nice! I am definately hooked!

I am well pleased with the Pietta. I have read the internal workmanship of the Uberti's is much better, but with a good file and a little time the Pietta's insides can be smoothed out the same. Remains to be seen for me as I don't expect to be doing a full dis-assembly real soon.

The outside is very pleasing to the eye and I have smaller hands than most and the grip fits me well.

Not a '58 but I do have a nearly brand new '75. It's an Uberti imported by Stoeger. It's not properly heat treated and after 20 rounds or so is nearly impossible to cock. Stoeger refuses to make good on the warranty, I can't get any feedback from Uberti. I can't recomend a gun from Uberti right now.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Interesting. To my eye, the Uberti more closely resembles the originals.  :o

I bought a new Uberti 1858 5.5 incher a week ago, and it is a fine gun. But I have seen some lemons from them also.

Major 2

I have the Uberti Forged Frame Conversion of the NM Remington in 45Colt.
This one of the early guns and the very (gun) subject of a Gun review for the SASS cronical.
Many Rounds have been sent down range.... :D it's a very good shooter
I had 0 issue, except the tiny screw that holds the keeper on the ejector tube was lost,
and that was at the cleaning table.

An email to Susan Webb @ Uberti in Brasica, neted me 3 replacement screws at no charge for the screws or the mailing.

I use it as my 45 Challenge gun of choice, otherwise I use may 44Colt Uberti Richards main match.

These are not the only Ubertis I have and I can't say I've have a lemon.

I would be very hard pressed to find anything bad to say about my new Cimarron/Uberti 1858 Navy. Excellent fit and finish. Beautiful lines.  Almost to pretty to shoot.  I'll find out about the shooting qualities next trip to the range.
One thing I've checked so far: My Lee 36 conical bullet looks to be very easily loaded, whereas in my previously owned Pietta 36, the chamber mouth didn't allow the conical to fit in slightly to allow a seating without any canting. ( Does that make sense????)
I've noticed that Uberti's are difficult to find, and are higher priced than Pietta's.  In a nut shell, I can't fault the newer vintage Piettas.
