New Model Army Nipple Threads - Help!

I have an original NMA that I have shot for a number of years.  I have never been able to remove the nipples, however, even with much soaking.  I finally took the cylinder to a local gunsmith that does really good work.  The last time I checked on it, he had managed to break off one of the nipples at the thread line.  It was probably a good thing in disguise because it was obvious that the nipple was cracked at the place it broke off.

The gunsmith does not know the old thread size, and I really want to keep it original and not drill and tap for modern threads.  I am hoping if anyone knows the specs of the original threads and if there is a tap available.

I want my revolver back!!  Thanks!

James Hunt

Sorry about your predicament. Can't help with the tap or thread size, but should you get the rest of them out I thought I'd tell you that  I purchased nipples from DGW advertised as for original Remingtons and much to my surprise they worked perfectly. I don't know the history of the ones that were on my gun but on the chance they were there when the gun came out of the factory I wanted to preserve them. Good Luck.

Make sure you have suitable replacement nipples before you run a tap though anything.

I found the revolver board at the Remington Society website.

Found a link to Peter Dyson in England, he is a large firm supplying many aspect of shooting and collecting.  The nipple size seems to be the same as large frame Colt percussion revolvers;  .225 X 32  ???  And he has many parts for originals.

Here is the Dixie website, and they have some parts for originals as well.  You might even be able to get a replacement cylinder? (made by UBERTI)

Regarding replacement cylinder.    Some years back a pard posted that he'd taken a Pietta '58 cylinder to a gun show and tried it in sevaral original New Model Army's and that it fit and indexed perfectly.    I keep getting tempted to buy an original in shootable condition . . . the trouble is . . . . . . I know that as soon as I have it that I won't be happy . . . and will want to have a pair of them . . . and a pair of shootable originals is a little more than my gun budget can take . . .  ::)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Thanks all for the advice and tips.  I have swapped emails with Wendy Dyson, and my cylinder may well make a trip across the pond.

Just an update.  Apparently my cylinder is making it's way back across the pond from Wendy Dyson.  I will let everyone know how it turned out - in case anyone is interested.
