I received an E-mail from one of my pards in the Alamo Area Moderators. it was really bad news. The National Shooting Complex, the facility thet we use to hold our monthly SASS shoots is no longer allowing CAS style shoots at their facility. This leaves us without a venue. It also puts a severe crimp in plans to start an NCOWS posse here inthe San Antonio area. Cub officials from the Alamo Area Moderators will meetthis week to discuss the options. Wish them luck!!!!

Good luck on finding a new shooting range.  I know it is a bit of a drive, but you would be welcome at the Magnolia Misfits near Houston (http://magnoliamisfits.embarqspace.com/), or if you are a little more adventurous, at the Berger Sharpshooters near Greenville (http://www.bergersharpshooters.com/) or the Texas Peacemakers near Tyler (http://www.texaspeacemakers.org/index.html)

What was the reason for no more CAS style shoots?

I saw this happen at a private gun club down near here about 6 years ago.

The club honchos were all shotgunners and bench shooters. They let a guy set up a few CAS targets one weekend. The minute they saw blacksplash from the shotgun ground targets, "all steel action targets" were outlawed.

Wonder if the same thing happened down at the San Antonio range.?

Some ranges do not want lead cast bullets being used and only allow jacketed bullets.  Please let us all know what happened to change their minds.

Yes the 2 clubs that used the facility won't be able to do so anymore.  3 other locations within easy driving distance come to mind.  The Texican Rangers, and Tin Star, both in Fredericksburg, and the Green Mountain Regulators in Marble Falls.  There are several other clubs within easy driving distance of San Antonio.  Why didn't you post this in the Longbranch or Shooters meeting instead of NCOWS, since no NCOWS clubs were affected?

Hi

If it's this place http://www.nssa-nsca.org/ I'm surprised that they let on the property at all.  That's the National Headquarters of the Skeet Shooters and Sporting Clays shooters.  Neither worry at all about rifles or pistols.  Both sports commonly have a lot of extra ground that you can shoot OVER when you're not using it for matches.  On the other hand, you're not likely to get a lot of crossover between the two sports.

I'm curious to see how long the new National Trap shooting place in Southern Illinois lets cowboy action pistol shoot there.  It will have the same problem and it's in Anti-gun Illinois.

He did state in the opening post that it put the Kibosh on his plans to start an NCOWS Posse.  Its alright as we are all in this together!

I'm not surprised, they have a dedicated pistol range on the property.

As far as the reason for shutting us down goes. I don't know. The "reason" given was as cryptic as a Mit Romney press release.

"With the recent issues at neighboring ranges, the continued development and growth around the National Shooting Complex, and the ever increasing liability concerns a decision has been made to discontinue use of the National Shooting Complex Rifle and Pistol Range effective immediately.  Please understand this decision does not come easily but it was made with the best interest of the NSSA, NSCA and NSC in mind.

Exceptions to immediate shut down are as follows:

ATK event scheduled May 15, 2012

Cowboy Action Match scheduled May 19, 2012

Sportsman Team Challenge scheduled June 6-10, 2012

State 4-H scheduled July 16-21, 2012

These events will be conducted as scheduled above with no commitment to any future use of the rifle and pistol range."

That is kind of weird.  Our CAS set up is at a Sporting Clays range and the owner is the one who asked that it be set up there.  Of course the additional money he makes isn't to bad.

Hi

That makes SOME sense.  Due to urban sprawl, many ranges close EVEN though Kansas Ranges are all supposed to be grandfathered in.  It really doesn't work that way, but that's the law.  Number 7.5 shot really doesn't travel very far.

Bugs, since you admit you haven't shot a CAS match, nor were a dues paying member of either club affected, aren't you being ambitious in trying to organize a NCOWS posse?  Where did you plan on recruiting the members, and where did you plan on shooting?  Are you even a NCOWS member?

John, you are correct. I am not shooting anything right now. I hope to get clearance from my Doctor as soon as my hand is healed up enough from the treatment that I received (Dupuytren's contracture). It may be as early as July. I wasn't tryimg to organize an NCOWS posse. I had learned from posts by Pancho Peacemaker that an attempt was being made to organize one in the San Antonio area and I wanted to know where and who to talk to about it. I wasn't looking to "recruit" anyone. I just wanted to find a place where I could shoot CAS and not be bothered by small minded, pompous, mental midgets that seem to think that they are the CAS membership police. No, I am not an NCOWS member. There being no posses in the area yet, I see no real reason to join. Yes, I am a SASS member.

Well Bugs, there are 7 SASS clubs within easy driving distance of your location, including one in San Antonio:  http://www.stxpistolaros.com/

That's sad.  "Urban sprawl" shut down one of my favorite ranges about 8 years ago.  Backwood Traps up near Prosper.  It was a fantastic shotgun range with really nice sproting clays, trap, and skeet fields.  A developer bought the land all around them and anounced new housing developments.  When this happened, they shut down all their centerfire rifle and pistol operations.  After the houses were occupied, the "sounds of gunfire" resulted in the range being shut down all together.  That's probably what'll happen here.

I doubt that that will happen. This is a state owned facility (World Shooting Complex) built specifically to attract the shooting sports. Mostly to attract the shotgun sports World's. They also included CAS into the complex to attract SASS. The Illinois state SASS shoot as well as the SASS U. S. Open are being held there. Only shotgun ranges are open during the week. The CAS corral can only be utilized during a CAS shoot. Can't shoot or practice there. The club that oversees the CAS facility holds a shoot once a month and hosts the state shoot and I believe the SASS U. S. Open. If you go to their site you will see there is a lot SASS events as well as small bore shooting going on every month.

Chicago is the only anti-gun part of Illinois.
