Greetings,

My carbine has three serious cracks in the butt stock, the worst begins on top of the butt socket, through the spring clearance hole, this is an old one and its sides are black, and runs back to the top of the comb, another branchs off it and runs a few inches along the sides.  The third is from shrinkage and had been filled with plastic wood that has now turned to powder.  I've sanded out the mag channel, it was very tight, to relieve pressure to expand the cracks.  Now the question is what kind of glue should I use that can be worked into the cracks, super glue, epoxy, or carpenter's glue?  Which would be best on this old wood?

Any other tips and tricks on repairing old stocks would also be appreciated.

Thanks to all,

Eric

I forgot to ask how tightly should a crack be clamped once glued?  Enough to make the glue just ooze out or as tightly as possible?

Again, thanks

Eric

EKJ,

When I repaired my stock, I used Elmer's carpenter's Wood Glue for Dark Woods because the finish on my stock was pretty dark . . . walnut color, I believe.  I tried to squeeze as much glue as possible into each crack which I tried to open enough to accept the glue.  I then used clamps to squeeze the cracks together until the glue ooozed out.  Wipe off all surface glue use a cloth with paint thinner to just get the surface glue off.  Leave the stock for a couple of days and you should be good to go.

Another thing you might do is to get a dowel a few inches longer than the length of the magazine hole, and wrap a piece of sandpaper around it (180/220) and staple the sandpaper to the dowel.  The dowel should just fit into the magazine hole.  Push the dowel in and out of the magazine hole to clean it it out and get any debris that may be in there.

We have an epoxy glue called Araldit, it comes "in two" versions, a slow and a fast. The slow version can be "thinned" with alcohol, to be added with a cannula.
