I've got this barrel...

I was going through my parts box looking for spare 1860 Army barrels for my guns. I'm going to modify them to handle conicals and paper cartridges properly.

Anyway, one 1860 Army barrel I pulled out has me scratching my head. It has no manufacturer's mark on it. No Italian proof house marks, no Italian date code. All it says is "- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA - " on top of the barrel.

My assumption was that this barrel was for a second generation 1860 Colt, but I thought Colt used Uberti or Army San Marcos parts to build the 2nd gen cap and ball guns.

I have 1860s made by Uberti, Pietta and Armi San Marcos, but this barrel fits none of them. The arbor hole on the barrel is to narrow to accept the arbor from any of those guns.

I got a bunch of loose barrels from a gun shop that was going out of business about seven years ago, and this was one of them.

Any idea what manufacturer made this?

I would think it it was made in Italy there would be proof marks on it.

Maybe it was made "somewhere's else"?

Your not "modifying it" yet , right Mike?  :o

Look at the riflings and make sure they are not gain twist. If gain twist, you've likely got an original.

Mike,

Uberti parts are compatible with 2nd Gens. I'm not sure about Signature series barrels though. Is it polished to a mirror bright blue finish? If so, It's probably a Sig Series. Then again, it could be one of Dixie's oddball parts.

It is in excellent condition. Way too good to be an original. It is well polished, but the blueing is dark blue, not bright blue.

I found spare Barrels in the pile for my Pietta and Uberti 1860s. It would have been sweet if this one had fit the ASM.

Long Johns Wolf

Mike, that could be a Centaure barrel "colterized" by Tommy Haas during the early 1960s.
How many grooves? Shallow rifling? Muzzle crowned?

It has seven, deep grooves...no crown. Rifling doesn't appear to be gain twist.

The OD of the barrel is a bit smaller than either Uberti or Pietta 1860 barrels.

It is a nicely made barrel. It's a shame it doesn't fit any of my guns.

Flint

If the barrel diameter is smaller than the Uberti or 2nd/3rd gen Colts, then it may be a Centaur, don't know if they were gain twisted.  Colt was gain twist LH, Uberti is constant twist RH.  Wouldn't be a Pietta uinless someone remarked it.  Colt 2nd and 3rd gens had no Italian proof marks, as they were assembled and finished in the USA, but the Colt barrels will fit an Uberti frame..

I just tried putting a Centaur barrel on a 2nd Gen Colt.  It fit fine.

Mike . . have you tried that barrel on an original Colt ?   Just because it is in "new" condition doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't an old one.   A few years back an original cylinder for a Remington New Model Army was for sale that was absolutely NEW . . . was an extra that had never been installed on a pistol.   :)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Send it to me  ;)

I have a ASM 1860 with 2-3/4" barrel, could use a longer one to  ;D
