Hello SSS,

Reposting this article for anyone who recently acquired a Spencer Rifle  ::) ::) if they are searching for a "correct" socket bayonetfor their Spencer Rifle  ;D ;D

Found this terrific article on Spencer bayonets by Paul D. Johnson & Joseph R. Marsden, which appeared in the August 2001 issue, Volume 23, Number 4 of Man At Arms magazine.  Please click once on the thumbnail photo, and then a second time in order to read it.  Then, if you decide you want to print the article place your cursor/arrow on each thumbnail photo and right click your mouse, and you will get a text screen with several options -including print picture.  Just click on that one and you will get a printed copy of that page.  Forgive the lesson, today, I am in my old teacher mode this morning ;D

Hi T.L.,

I'm still reading all the information I've collected in order to determine the "correct" socket bayonet to buy for my Spencer Rifle.  The Johnson and Marsden article posted above has quite a bit of information to absorb :P :P  and then you still have to find the correct one to buy.

To me the bayonet  fitted to the rifle in the picture does not look like it is a Spencer bayonet,it does not rest on the front of the stock cap when locked in place ,if the bayonet was to hit somthing hard wyle being trust it could break the sight off.If you look at the photo in the Marcot Spencer book you will see the bayonet is not locked in placa ,but you can clearly measure the distance it will move back when it is locked in place, this will have it resting against the for stock cap(bayonet stop).I can not imagine that the military would accept a bayonet that was very likly to break the bayonet stud sight off the rifle when used
