John,

Local news is reporting many cell towers are down and cell coverage is very sparce in some areas.  80,000+ people without power also tonight.

If I can be of help reaching someone for you, please let me know.

Thanks Greg. Her cousin checked in by Facebook. Rain and hail and winds, nothing worse. The kids treated it like an adventure, their mother was plumb scared.

When I lived in San Antonio in the late '50s Lucky Strikes were still a popular cigarette ...

The 'L.S.M.F.T.' on the label was supposed to mean 'Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco' ... but everyone I talked to from the Lone Star State said it really was a code and prayer for 'Lord Save Me From Texas'.

All kidding aside, my heart and prayers go out to those less fortunate Texans .... truly!

P.S.,

I was working for USAA doing damage reports for about 12 hours a day during the hurricanes that hit Northern Florida.

Something that never gets mentioned when emergency equipment articles are written is a car charger cord for  one's cell phone.

The first reports I got for damage was almost invariably someone whose cell phone was recharging as they called in their initial damage report ...

The person normally had not had power for three or four days ... all the food in the fridge and freezer was defrosted and bad ... but they had charged their cell phone while driving around and could call out (and receive calls) on their cell phone ....

From Guy Clark:

well the sky was blacker than a funeral suit
hotter than a depot stove

tornado time in texas
take the paint right off of your barn

well when pigs fly,no I mean really fly
you can bet that it's blowin hard
uncle clarence was sittin in the outhouse
now he's sitting in the yard
granny's got the barn cat under her arm
she's got a dish pan over her head
Daddy's countin kids four five six
better bring a loaf of bread

take the paint right off of your barn
tornado time in texas

hidin in the cellar with the cannin jars
sounds like a train up top
hold your breath and peek outside
to see what we ain't got
it'll take your wheat,it'll take your corn
even take your cotton balls
suck red river just as dry as a bone
dump it on wichitaw falls

Very relieved to hear that all our NCOWS pards near D/FW are safe and OK. Was thinking about you folks all evening yesterday as the news reports were coming in.

Pray for those not as fortunate who suffered injuries or serious property damage. Truly a blessing that no one was killed in such monster storms as these.

Thanks for all the prayers.  They musta worked, cause we've got zero fatalities so far.   Hard to believe that a dozen twisters can drop on a population of 6 million people and no one died.  Thank the Lord for that.

A few notes that might help folks (and maybe you already know this):

1)  In a disaster, text messages can often get through when service is limited.  Evidently text messages don't take as much bandwidth as would a voice call.  Local emergency officials stressed this last night:  text, don't call.

2)  Non-Texans will be surprised to find that most homes in this area don't have basements.  Our soil expands and contracts so much, that basements will crack.  If you are around these parts in a twister outbreak, go to a building with a basement or other fortified structure.  I saw 2 big newly contructed brick homes this morning that were completely flattened.  The bricks and mortar became projectiles.

3)  Prayer works.
