I have a problem with my Rossi lever gun slipping down my shoulder during rapid fire.  The smooth butt plate has no grip.  I was thinking a checkerd  butt plate would help a lot.  Anyone know if anybody makes 'em?  Any other ideas?   Thanks....Pluggem

You can also get some thin, soft leather, take off the butt pad, then put the leather around it with the rough side out.  Then put the butt bap back on so the leather will help hold it to your shoulder.  Some have even glued the leather to the butt pad.

Will, what Marauder said. The rough out leather will keep the butt from sliding and will cost less then a checkered buttplate.

Or, consider one of the lace-on leather but wraps.

Howdy,

A buttwrap might be the answer, but I'd also suggest that you look at a few other factors.
Is the gun too long?  Many times a gun that is too long will be hard to hold onto the shoulder.  Gunmakers tend to put a bit extra on the length and it's been my experience that short is a lot easier to work than long.

Is your mounting technique working?  It might help if you work your elbow up a bit higher, if you currently use a stance that puts your elbow angling down towards the ground.

Or, strap that puppy to yer arm with duct tape.. ;)
Adios,

Thanks fer the idea's.  I just happen to have a wood saw, some leather and some duct tape on hand.  I beleive I'll wack an inch off that bad boy and duct tape a leather recoil pad on it (har de harhar!! ;) I think the leather wrap is just what I need..........pluggum

Will, if you do decide to shorten the butt, don't think in inch increments; think in fractions, like a quarter inch at a time.  That way, you can custom fit the thing.  And the leather butt wrap is an ideal coverup for a shortened butt, rather than having to refit the buttplate; unless you have a nice "hooked crescent" style, then  :o, all bets are off.
