  Anyone care to post on why some scatterguns will shoot "doughnut" hole patterns?

My theory is too much powder & not enough shot.  Yer blowin' that big ol' greasy wad through yer shot column.  Watched a pard havin' that trouble - shot was hittin' all around the edges of the target & the was would smack it right in the middle.  Next shoot he tried more shot & less powder, knocked down targets with authority.

From PTERYPLEGIA     http://home.insightbb.com/~bspen/ptery.html

Mr. Markland knew all about it in 1727.  This is the stanza on the proper loading of the fowling piece. The highlighted lines indicate that 1/3 by volume more shot than powder would gain the sportsman his game

OUR SPORT almost at hand, we charge the Gun,
Whilst ev'ry well-bred Dog lies qui'tly down.
Charge not before. If over-Night the Piece
Stands loaded, in the Morn the Prime will hiss:
Nor Prime too full, else you will surely blame
The hanging fire and lose the pointed Aim.
Should I of This the obvious Reason tell:
The caking Pressure does the Flame repel
And Vulcan's lamed again by his own Steel.
Yet cleanse the Touch-hole first: A Partridge Wing
Most to the Field for that wise Purpose bring.
In Charging, next, good Workmen never fail
To ram the Powder well, but not the Ball;
One Third the well-turn'd Shot superior must
Arise, and overcome the nitrous Dust,
Which, dry'd and season'd in the Oven's Heat,
Has stood in close-mouthed Jarr the dampless Night.
Now search for Tow, and some old Saddle pierce:
No Wadding lies so close or drives so fierce.
And here be mindful constantly to Arm
With Choice of Flints, a Turn-Screw and a Worm;
The accidental Chances of the Field
Will for such Implements Occasion yield.

Stu & I are either both right or both wrong. We agree. I've seen donuts disappear after I cut the powder charge when using lubricated fiber filler wads in my ML shotgun. I have not seen that issue (donut shaped patterns) when using steel shot cups that hold together in spite of the BP charge. A slow, tight pattern will knock over the steel better than a fast wide pattern. I've seen blooper loads that barely flung the shot out the barrel put down steel just fine (much to the entertainment of the onlookers).

Yup, blooper sounds funny when shooting also.  The gun goes "PORP" and the shot trickles out the muzzle, or not.  The RO stops the action and a rod is produced to clear the bore.  I've not had it happen to me, yet, but I've been there when it happened to another shooter.

Anyway, no "doughnut hole" from that load. . . . :D
