Rowdy,  Just GOOGLE "Texas Turkey hunting laws" and you should get your question answered.

Not in the Spring. It's ok during Deer Season.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

I have taken turkey with a .223.  Base of the neck shot leaves the bird intact. Most folks in South Texas do their turkey hunting during the deer season. .

As SF said, there is a restriction to shotgun only during the brief spring season.   Spring season is usually too hot for a fun hunt.

Thanks Everyone ,
Thought it would be fun to take a Tom with my 1873 using black powder . There was a picture in the NWTF magazine a couple years ago of a 1800 Hunter carrying a 73 and a couple turkeys . Wish I hadn't thrown that magazine away .

My part of South Central Texas is overrun with turkeys this year!  There are so many at one of my friend's places, that they were literally running the deer away from the feeder so they could eat the corn!  I plan on using a rifle this fall during deer season to try and plug one myself.  Of course, the rifle will be a lever-action, probably stoked with black powder cartridges!

Jake

Good luck and let us know how things went .

Will do, Rowdy!  I want to take my deer this year with a black powder cartridge-loaded lever gun as well.
