Have devloped quite an intrest in the open tops and have a few new of both Uberti and Pietta.
Hopeing to begin to "build " my own witch leads into my story picked up an old {1971] sherrifs model 51
and was told it was a Pietta. When I started playing around with swapping parts around found quite a mixture.
The barrel mates up with the Uberti frame and the cylinder measures as all other Ubertis but the nipples are
the same size as the piettas and the arbor is the same diamiter as the Piettas. So much for simple parts changeing.
The frame has all the proof markings and date but no sign of any trademark.
Still plan to add the short barrel to a steel frame an conversion cylinder; the last thing about my find is it had the
uglyist wood I've ever seen no grain, ???looks blotched or motted. HOPE EVERONE ENJOY THIER OPEN TOPS>

The arbor OD is the same on Uberti and Pietta.
Many of the early pistols have no "makers mark" so it can be a bit of a challenge!

I just finished an early Sheriff model today in a "gunsmith" style conversion and chambered for 41 Colts inside lubed.
It had some strange tolerances also and needed the barrel set back to take up excessive cylinder gap with the conversion cylinder.

Good luck on your project and if you need any help or advise shoot me a PM!

It is a Pietta. Look under the loading lever.

Diamond Dan

The new Ubertis have ther logo under the barrel but as I stated nothing on the one I have.
I think Hoof Harted is right about the arbors being the same I think what I'm seeing is machine
tolerance. Still alot of fun. DD

Pietta often put a simple FAP mark under the loading lever in the 70s. Your post did not mention there were no markings under the lever, you only spoke of the frame.
Post a picture, the grip shape will answer the question for all. But, it is a Pietta.

Diamond Dan

The grip is definalty Uberti; all in all I was just saying that it's an intresting peice.
Would not convert it as it is a brass frame;just hoping swaping some parts around
would get me the gun I wanted. DD

I'm really confused, I'm not sure which gun you're talking about. Can you post pictures of the two guns?

Doesn't matter who made it.  If it works and the owner has fun with it, "others" opinions judt don't matter.

Fun IS the name of the game, after all!

Yes lots of fun, replaced the old battered nipples/cones with some stock ones I had;they are to long.
Guess I'll try some of the staniless ones from Track of the wolf as I've read there a bit shorter .
SO MANY GUNS SO LITTLE TIME YAALL HAVE FUN   DD ;D
