OT: Plastic scale model guns

Back in the fifties until the mid-eighties there were a number of companies (Revell, Pyro, LS, Marui, etc.) who made such model guns in kit form.  Some were very close copies, down to the markings, of the real guns.

Does anyone have a source for these anymore?

I'd like to pick up some unbuilt kits to play arround with if I could find them.

Also, any of the old aluminum guns.  Not the ones to shape holsters, but some of the more detailed ones that were available in the same time period.  Some of those could be super detailed with little more than files, sandpaper, and metal scribes.

Any information would be appreciated.

Saw one of the plastic kits once, at a model competition/expo in Austin.  Haven't seen another since.  From what I remember the tag claimed they were out of production.

The closest I've seen since are some of the airsoft guns, though the quality tends to vary on those.

I think most are out of production because of pc sentiment and, in some cases, laws that have been passed.

Sure made some grreat wall hangers for folks who had the real McCoy locked up forr security.

I'm already familiar with those, Derby, but they aren't kits.  I want some i can build myself with my grandson's help and hang them on his wall.

BTW, Collector's Armoury has the best selection of ready to hang dummy guns I've ever seen.

Forty Rod, believe you're going to have to visit a lot of flea markets. Part of the law on non-firing replicas made them be produced with a red front on the barrel. I haven't seen one of the kits in years.

I know what you're talking about, Forty.  Used to have a couple made by a Japanese company.  Exact to the measurements S&W mod 29 and a Colt 1911.  Both fired cartridges that used those plastic caps.  The 1911 actually functioned and ejected fired cartridges.  The drawback on these is that the brass and plastic cap combo was worse than shooting BP.  Only other downside was the weight.  None came close to what the originals were, but then these were made of ABS plastics. :)  The 1911 didn't last long.  ABS is not strong enough for that much violent movement.  :(  I procrastinated on buying a replacement.  Something I sorely regret. >:(

I talked to the fella that owned the hobby shop where I bought them, a few years ago.  Said they are no longer being made and that some of the Japanese companies are now concentrating on airsoft guns.

Btw, these made most excellent training tools because of the size and attention to detail....and they did look very real.  Sorry I can't help you with where to find them, Forty.

Forty, just did a search and came up with this website, www.endoshoji.com.  They have a link to Marui and they're still making "blow back" models that need to be assembled.  You can order from them, but it's in japan, costs $120 USD and another $40 for shipping.  Another option is to find a airsoft dealer and ask if they can order them for you.  They still make the 2 models I used to have.  :)

Just checked the other links.  They got almost everything from Colt SAA's to AK 47s.  All are "blow back" models, which use 7mm caps or use only solid cartridges.  Most are already assembled.  Most seem to cost about as much as a real gun.  Marui seems to be the only company making models to assemble.

Try a PYRO or MIB model search on EBAY. Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but.........
