Drove up to the mid-state yesterday and picked up the new Uberti Centenial Model that the wife ordered for my birthday.  Since it is in the 45-75 caliber it is supposed to be a bit finicky on ammunition is my understanding.  I should have everything I need to load black powder for it except the right bullets.  I want to pick around a bit more before deciding on a first bullet to try but in the mean time I do have some smokeless lubed bullets and APP that I can play with.

In his lever rifle book, Venturino he claims it was one of the most accurate lever gun combinations Winchester ever came out with but then in his next breathe pretty much says to just put the powder in and a bullet on top, its just a lever gun!  This gun was bought to be a fun gun and a lever match gun for Buffalo Matches, will it respond to pampering ones loads or is MV right, drop em and pop em?

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

The factory bullet was 350 grains.  Any heavier and the base of the bullet protrudes below the neck, which is not ideal.  Other than that, many bullets can give good perfomance.  Mine is the special order from Louis Sellman, Lyman 457192 which works well but some would say it doesn't carry enough lube.  Its OK for me!

If you plan on hunting with your new rifle, a classic bullet that is available currently from Lyman is the 457122HP, the famous "Gould hollow point"  If properly cast it works well.  BTW Midsouth Shooting Supply usaully have good prices.

Might give this bullet some thought.
Also would likely do well to get with Powder Inc and get some KIK 1.5 F headed your direction. That powder is working real well in bottleneck cases.

I have been getting my Goex drom them and will get a can or two of the KIK to play with on my next order.  I figured lube would be even more important with the 28" barled multi-shooter.  Definitely gots to old to start learning new tricks so plan to just try to find a good bullet for this gun but wouldn't mind doing my own lubing since it is so hot here in the summer.

You'll like the way the KIK leaves the barrel so clean looking.
Might want to give some Bullshop Nasa lube a try. The stuff is pretty good.
Also if you can find some a mix of 1/2 ozokerite and 1/2 vaseline is a good one, stiffen it a little with beeswax if it needs.

One of the first things I need to do is wrap the lever, it is ruff as a cop and my hands are already pretty beat up right now.  Perhaps I can get the action slicked a might when my lottery ticket hits tonight!  Have not heard of any of the chemicals mentioned, other than vaseline, and sources might help.  My old mix was pretty much the common bees wax and crisco but that gets really messy and attracts dirt and grime in our hot summer weather.  This was partially what drove me to Clean Shot years ago and now I am using APP in my SASS cartridge loads.

Ozokerite is a waxy substance they use in cosmetics.
You can also just go with the original Winchester lube recipe , beeftallow.

I've been using Bullshops Nasa lube, and really liking it even in hot and dry conditions.

Must be a very accurate rifle, the Winchester 1895 was used to win the Wimbledon Match one year.  Not sure what the other fellows used but the 1895 outshot them?!?  [Or is it !?!]

As far as fill them and lead them, well, that is how you reload black powder cartridges.  Fill the case with enough powder so there is no airspace under the bullet.  There can be refinements, of course, but that technique works as a basic load.
