Today I thought I would take some pictures of side by side comparisons of my original M1872 artillery first Sergeant chevron to the set of reproductions I just got from Quartermaster Shop this week. These are very faithful reproductions. The sizes are almost identical. The stitching is identical and the form is extremely similar. There are only three minor differences. The Quartermaster Shop reproductions are slightly longer than my originals. This will allow them to be tucked under and finished with a nice edge. The second difference is that the color of the original is a slightly brighter shade of red. The final difference is in the consistency of the red material. The original has a very smooth texture similar to the blue. It is almost like the texture of felt.

I am extremely pleased with the comparison. It just goes to show you how much attention to detail Quartermaster Shop puts into their chevrons.

The pictures in the links are extremely large.

The first thing I notice, besides the color, is the size of the diamonds are different.

The Quartermaster diamond is 69mm tall and the original is 59mm tall.

Pitspitr

When you're comparing the color did you look inside the the fold on the inside of the chevron?

Grapeshot

While examining the photoes Imnoticed that the original the space between the stripes is heavy cable stitching and the stripes on the reproduction seem to be separate stripes made from a herring bone twill tape.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Grapeshot, I don't think you are seeing what you think you are seeing. My current strips on the uniform I wear in my avatar pic are made as you describe but these stripes were purchased to correct that error.

In both cases the red is a single piece of fabric for all the stripes. The stripes are separated by a single row of embroidery using a stitch I believe is called chain stitch. It is possible that the stitch used on the original and different stitches. I cannot tell due to my lack of expertise in embroidery stitches. I can show it to my wife who is an expert in medieval embroidery. She could tell at a glance if the same stitch is used. Woulf anyone like me to check with my wife?

Grapeshot

Maybe my computer and my bad eyes called that one wrong.  No foul intended.  I stand corrected.  They still look good, and yes, it's called a chain stitch.

That thought never crossed my mind. I apologise if I sounded harsh. that was equally unintended.
