How can I become a better duelist?

I haven't been doing this long. Only got about 7 or 8 matches under my belt. I shoot double duelist, mainly cause you never saw John Wayne using both hands (unless he had a pistol in each one of them) I normally run in the 40's time wise. My shooting with my left hand has definately improved. I've shot two clean matches so far. I need to work on transitions and returning back to the holster....Also another thing that costs me time is my shotgun. It's a double Stoeger but I havent chamfered the chambers and sometimes it takes me a long time to get the shells in there. Once I do get it closed I'm quick as snot with the two shots and it seems like I shuck 'em pretty good.....Thinking about eventually transitioning into gunfighter class. Looking for practicing tips. Common mistakes that people make that costs them time and such.

Concentrate on accuracy and don't worry about speed.  Oh and for pete sake have fun!!

The best advice I can give is to practice, practice, practice - then practice some more.

Investing in practice ammunition and range time pays off, no matter what shooting discipline you follow.

Dry fire practice helps a lot in gaining more speed and control with the left hand and with transitions.  You can pick up more time practicing transitions that you can imagine.  Keep both hands going, as one hand picks up a gun the other should be putting one down or putting one away.  Keep both hands busy.  Double duelist allows for some pretty gamey transitions too.


Take a video camera to the match with you and video tape some of the better shooters,. Watch them closely.  Take videos of yourself and watch them.  Pay attention to where you are wasting movement and how you could save time in on stage then practice those things.
