Cavalry challenge

Here's a challenge for the Cavalry buffs ...

the current issue of Man At Arms/Gun Collector magazine has a clear photo of a mounted horse soldier, sabre drawn, sitting erect in the saddle. Even the horse is posing!
He is wearing the low riding, swivelling holster for the 1911, leggings, gauntlets, etc.

Editor Stuart Mowbray is offering a prize if you can correctly identify and name all weapons and horsey accoutrement in the photo.
I'd post the pic, but I'm a techno-illiterate.

Saw that, didn't see the contest.  I could list it easy if I have a copy of the image (that time period is my specialty)..I do not that he has a M1906 (or could be a M1858) Light Cavalry Saber instead of the M1913.  You don't often see the older saber in the hands of a guy with a M1911 Colt.

Do we know what the prize is and is it worth my time?

The prize won't be much, but you'll have the glory of being the smartest Cowboy on the block.

Swallow your mercenary instincts and do it for fun. If your time is that valuable, don't bother .... ;>)

Wow a curb bit, did not know the Cav used them.

Not sure why, but had thought they used a snaffle, guess old dogs can learn something once in a while.

Actually, that looks more like the M1892 Bit.  As the guy carries a M1896 Krag Carbine (you can see the sling bar) it probably is a M92, but COULD be a '74.  Also is seems like he is riding a pre-1896 saddle (unmodified M1885)...  

...ever notice how you can know TOO much weird information...ugh!

PS...Looking at it again, I am not sure, but the saddle is looking more like a M1874 than a M1885.  Have to pull some books I guess.

Check out the cinch.  The '85 was cincha-rigged, while the '74 had a modification of the older '59 Mac system of a "kinda-sorta-but-not-really" cinch with buckle, etc.  May be hidden by the trooper's leg though.  Good luck!
