On this New Bounty Hunter II SxS of mine, I have to really slam the thing shut to get it to actually lock!  Is this typical of a new SxS shotgun & how long does it take before it locks easier? ::)

I have disassembled it twice & put it back together & the same thing! :o

My Rossi coach gun was like that when I first got it!  Now it closes by itself, when it's not supposed to.  The thing is after fifteen plus years, I'm not sure anymore when the transition took place.  When I was first trying to loosen it up, I put some gunslick (a very mild lapping compound) on the moving parts in the latch area and such, then proceeded to drive my wife and the cats nuts by opening and closing the thing repeatedly while watching Westerns.   This finally eased it into pretty good working order!

It's sorta like the doors on new "Pete", Walker; after a bit of opening and closing, they just start to goin' "clik-clik", instead of "slam-slam".

If ya buy a new Holland and Holland, or simmilar price high priced gun, the hand fitting takes care of it.  All mass produced guns are in my opinion a kit that is 99% finished.  I'm glad because I can do the extras my self and save, guns would be 2 to 3 times as much if they were "finished."  Not everyone can do the extras and there are many fine gunsmiths who make a living finishing guns.

But many guns are damaged or even ruined by those who don't know how, not every one paid to work on guns is good.  Just put some tooth paste on the lock and hinge pin and put in Lonesome Dove or similar long movie and open and close it.  It's hard to go to far this way, clean it up and lube it.  If it ain't as good as you want tooth paste it again.

Don't take this wrong, but by your questions you ain't done this much, so don't grab no files, stones, valve lapping compound or emmory paper.  This will get you in trouble faster that you knnow what happened.

This is my first shotgun I ever owned & just want to do things right! ;)

Anytime I have a problem with a gun that I can't figure out, I take it to the shop! 8)

Del is right about this..hands off files, hones all that stuff..or you'll wind up paying a arm and a leg for gunsmith work or even buying a new shotty gun to replace the one you fouled up beyond repair....
