Howdy!

My pistolsmith is bored. He'd like to make me a new 1911. He's heard about Wild Bunch matches.

I understand that the pistol would have to have fixed rear sights, but are there any other constraints? Does it have to have any particular frame, such as a rounded trigger guard? Are beavertails allowed? How about the extended slide release? Are ambi-safeties allowed? Should it be in any particular color?

He says the more details I can get, the better. I don't know how strictly the "rules", if any, apply to Wild Bunch and WASA matches, but I'd like to stay within them.

Also, where does a person get lead ammunition in .45ACP? He's always shot jacketed and the gents at the local shop shoot jacketed for IDPA and IPSC.

Thanks for you help!

As for lead, I think you might have to load it.

For WB matches, that'll depend on the match.  Here, any 1911 (or earlier)  in 9mm or larger, shooting lead, that doesn't have a compensator and/or electronic optical sights is fine.

Ma'am:

Which 1911? You'll get a lot of different replies. Mine is a box stock Springfield Mil Spec 45ACP.

Modifications? That will be determined by the respective club. Doc named a few that would not be allowed. Staying safe, if it looks like an issue 1911, you're safe.

Course now, if I wanted some goodies added to one, I would go ahead. But, I would be preapred to have it flagged at a shoot.

Lead? That's been in use for years, primarily started with the WC and SWC used by the Target Shooters. As I reload mine, can't name any commercial sources.

As a southpaw I would like to know, has anyone been denied the use of a 1911 or 1911A1 with an ambidextrous safety at a Wild Bunch Match?

Sincerely,

Now where did I put that fuming nitric acid?

Does anyone smell smoke?

I asked that in my original post! :D

So, if I bring a Kimber to a Wild Bunch match, that would be acceptable? 1911A1s are acceptable?

This would be acceptable?

???

What I am hearing is that there are no specs for 1911s for Wild Bunch matches other than no optical sights or compensators. Is that correct?

Hey Annie Lee, How ya doin girl?

That thingy on the front of the grip frame may give ya a problem at some places cause it don't even look like a 1911 with that stcikin out.  Also fixed sights are normally required too.  As far as ammo, do ya reload .45acp?  If so I got plenty of 230gr LRN boolits and I could give ya some.  I also have several hundred rnds loaded if ya just need a few fer a match.

I don't believe that there are any published standards.

For the WB category here (and as of this month it's a permanant part of our local W3G match), no electronic optics and no comps was chosen as the requirement from a strictly competitive view.  If you show up with one with a Bomar in back, a fiber optic up front, hard chromed, melded, fully worked over and tricked out, but no comp or electronics, then it'll be allowed.  For what we're shooting, all that stuff isn't going to make a great deal of difference in the results.

The idea was to allow folks to bring out some other guns and shoot 'em.  Shooters will also have the option to use a 10 round mag and use the pistol to engage the rifle targets.
