I found an odd tool today. The guy with it says it is a strap cutter. Not sure if he is right.

Basically it looks like an embosser/skiver type setup with the crank handle, 2 rollers, etc. BUT at the far end there is a large cutting wheel on the top and a anvil wheel with a groove for the cutter wheel on the bottom shaft. As you turn the crank, it turns the cutter and the anvil. It is old, heavy cast iron, with the large finger eating gears in it and I would guess dates to the late 1800s.
To the side of the cutter part, it looked like there might be room for an embossing wheel, but there is no wheel there.

It had a name cast in top, but I forget everything but the Connecticut part... :-[

Anyone have any ideas?? I will probably pick it up next Sat. anyway for the coolness of it.

I also found a very long and sharp lacing fid/saddle needle, and possibly an old maker stamp with only "_._. Iverson" on the stamp. I will probably pick it up too, but it may not be a leather stamp at all.

Do you have a picture you could attach; most of us on here would love to see  this old tool you are describing.

Thanks,

You may have found a Sole Cutter/Trimmer.  How many spaces on the two rollers?  If they are graduated from about 1/4 up to 2" it is a strap creaser and a very handy machine.

Sorry no pics. Didnt have my camera with as it was kind of a spontaneous trip.
There are no rollers, just space on the shaft that might have been for rollers.
I will definately have more info next weekend.

Go to Weaver Leather's site and look at the machinery.  There were handcrank strap cutters, if that is one check to see if the blades are available before spending any money.  The blades for my power strap cutter cost about $25.00 each, I have no idea what spacers would cost.
Strap cutters are only good when doing production runs and mine does not get used much as we are retired.

  Hope this helps.
