I have a chance to get a 205.  What should I look for when evaluating it?  Are there different more or less desirable models?  Are there common problems, or parts that are often missing or broken?  I have  a bunch of lighter machines, so I am aware of how machines work, but not familiar with this machine, or even this category of machines.  I was looking at a cobra, but this one is a lot cheaper, and while I would prefer the larger capability of a cobra, it is just a hobby for my so I have to be reasonable.

It's a 205-64.  I know a few guys here have them.  Any thoughts?

Massive,

The Adler line of machines is one of the top machines made.  The 205-64 only has a 11.5" to 12" long sewing arm, where as the the 205-364 has a 16" throat.  The Juki 441 clones (Artisan, Ferdco, Cobra, Cowboy, etc.) all have the 16" throat which is great if you are doing larger projects....the 12' throat is fine but will be a little restrictive when doing a gunbelt with bullet loops...but it is workable....question is:  how old is this machine and what condition is it in  most of all PRICE.....If you opt for a new machine you may pay a little more but you get a warranty..especially from Steve at Cobra.

It is dependent upon what your needs are....

Condition I don't really know.  I have seen a picture, and it looks fine there.  Guy says it runs but might need a little adjustment, which sounds like any sewing machine I have bought.  :)  I do notice that parts are expensive.  So something like a worn hook could make a difference in how the price works out.  Without beating him down though, it is about 1/4 the price of a new clone.

For that money I would probably take my chances. Could buy a lot of parts.

If I am not mistaken I think the Adler's use the same style hook and bobbins as the Juki clones...but Cliff is right on...if you can get it for a good price...also the US division for Adler is located in Atlanta, GA...so parts should be available

Thanks for the advice.  I am also thinking that for that price if I want to move up later to a cobra I could either make money on the 205 or certainly not pay much for the few years service up to an upgrade.  If I were selling it I would be a lot more positive about it's condition, and should be able to get my money back.
