On my YouTube channel I've had a few requests to show how I clean black powder guns. This three part series shows my techniques.

I'm not saying this is the only way to clean black powder guns, nor am I saying it's the best way. All I'm saying is that it is my way. And this year marks my 40th year shooting B-P. This works for me.

Part 1: Cleaning products & shotgun cleaning
Part 2; Rifle cleaning
Part 3: Revolver cleaning

Very interesting and informative.  I may have wetted the bore of the pistol initially letting the solution work while cleaning the cylinder, cleaned the bore and then the rest of the gun.

How do you de lead the forcing cone?

The leading was very minor, in the rifling just forward of the forcing cone. I did 25 passes with the Shooter's Choice lead remover on a bronze brush. I dip the brush back into the solution after every five strokes...cleaned it all out just fine.

I usually use my nylon flex pistol rod an old short brass brush and work the forcing cone area from the back end.  Coming in at an angle is really hard on a brush, but usually have a couple of oldish ones.

Leading does not seem to be a problem with either using BP or Shooting Moly Koted.

Mike, that is pretty much how I do it. I've only been shooting black powder this year. Most everyone I talked too up here in Canada said to use water. At a SASS shoot we had a while back I met a fella (Grayfox), who told me about Ballistol. I do use water for detailed (strip the guns down) cleaning, but only after 4 to 5 shoots. I use Ballistol every other time.
This is good information for anyone starting out. Most people I talk to will not try black powder because they think it is harder to clean... Imagine that!
Anyway Mike, keep those videos coming. They are a fantastic resource!

Mike I did a little test to see if while using Pyrodex and BP wads and not cleaning the guns for 6 days would cause any damage? Lyckilly nothing happened. I then tried Cornmeal instead of Wads and Crisco as a flash-over prevented and lube to see how it preserved the gun. So far at 4 ddays No damage and no reaql build-up. I am going to clean them (Water and Windex) and consider the testing done.
There's just some times you can't clean the guns the same dau and I wondered if it'd harm them?
I fouund out that you have more than 23 hourds to clean-up!

Should think the higher the humidity the shorter the time before corrosion / rusting occurs.
