Has been stored for years .
The one on the left is Real BP and Yes that price sticker says $5.00 I am going to load this and shoot it. Looks fine even after all these years in storage.

The black canyon I will try to use but I have not heard anything much good about it.

Amazing what one can find digging through storage boxes LOL  ;)

Mason I don't remember about the Goex (old) but the Dupont is about 10% hotter than the new stuff. WM

Speaking of Goex and the One True Powder!  ;)

We just finished decorating a new stage at our club outside of Houston (Thunder River Renegades).  Notice the Goex banner and color scheme for the stage.  This one was (big surprise!) sponsored by the black powder shooters in the club.

Mason, y'all need to come make some smoke with us.  It was good shooting with you at Windy Gap, now come on down and we'll show you some Texas hospitality.

My old can of Dupont from the 1970s says $3.50. I hate to shoot it for nostalgia's sake.

Blackpowder Burn , I would love to come down for a shoot with you all. I do pass through once a year on my way back to az. We like taking the southern route on the way home. Maybe I can work it out so it will be the same time as your monthly match.
I have just the ammo loaded up. 45 Colt loaded to the max with 250 big lubes and some shotgun with 70 gr . BOOM BOOM BOOM !!! ;D

My old can of powder is already one quarter used. My friend in Bagdad and I used it for muzzle loader and boy did we have some fun. So I will use the rest and save the can in memory of Butch Allen. What a true BP shooter and friend was he.

Had some of that Black Canyon given to me some years back.  It turned into one lump.  I had a hard time getting it to go boom, but when it did it blew a respectable hole in the lawn.  Don't think much of Black Canyon powder/lump.

The darker the Black Canyon gets the more it has lost "umph". If it is black and a solid lump it is not much good. I have taken some like that and loaded shotgun shells with it for hitting swingers but I wouldn't rely on it for anything serious. When fresh, it looks like grey kitty litter. I found a very accurate load for the .357 by filling the case 3/4 full, packing it down with a dowel to a solid pellet then filling the case again and seating the 158gr bullet. It shot into 2" at 50 yards from the bench. BC is very corrosive to brass cartridge cases so you need to clean them in water within a day of shooting them or the blue/green corrosion starts.

I have the old red & white cans of DuPont in Fg - FFg - FFFg and FFFFg.  The lot numbers are:
Fg      01-??  01-53
FFg      02-37   02-15   02-101
FFFg      03-101
FFFFg      04-47  04-30  04-53

I would be interested to know the lot numbers on your cans by grade of powder.
Have been trying to figure what year these lot numbers represent on mine for a long time!
The prefix numbers, ie 01, 02, 03 and 04 obviously represent the grade of powder ... but the suffix numbers are a mystery respective to what year

What my guess is ... the suffix numbers were assigned sequentially and continued on a year by year basis ... each year having a block of numbers like serial number ranges for the production of firearms

Quote79FE 27 B              03-78
Thanks Mason.  I think I got this one figured out:
79FE 27 B - Packaging information ...February 27, 1979, B representing the shift
03-78 ... 03=FFFg, 78 = the production batch number or possibly produced in 1978
If the 78 is the production year, then I don't have a clue for the 101 on my can of FFg as   02-101

And if the suffix number is the production year, I have some old stuff.  Such as 15 - 30 - 37 and 53.  But I don't know for sure but don't believe the DuPont cans were red/white back in 1915 or 1930

QuoteIn 1973, after DuPont filled its last contract for black powder, the Moosic plant was also sold.
Mason, the mystery deepens!  Found the quote on the DuPont Heritage website.  Goex bought out DuPont @ the Moosic plant.  Your date is 1979, so that means the powder was produce by Goex and packaged in a DuPont can  :o

Quote"Caution keep out of reach of Children" says Goex, Inc.
Wildman, great catch.  Never knew that after Goex bought the Moosic operation from DuPont in 1973 that they continued to use the DuPont logo on the front with Manufactured by Goex Inc on the back

All of my DuPont cans make no mention on the back about Moosic.  The read:
MANUFACTURED BY
E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO.
INCORPORATED
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, U.S.A

It's a shame that a goodly part of the Moosic history has been lost. Mick Fahringer and his father who both ran the plant for years, plus Don MacDonald were long term employees at the Moosic Plant.  Mick died at 42 and Hodgdon fired MacDonald.  They could fill in a lot of blanks

Here's a picture at Moosic

We only ever seem to be able to get one brand at a time. It was always Goex, but now seems to be Wano is the only sort available. Saves us a bit of decision making I suppose. I have a tin of Goex in the garage, near 20 years old, onlt used it to try out a few loads, must dig it out.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!
