The local 'smith I normally use tells me that the cylinder on my Uberti .45 Colt is worn to the point that it needs to be replaced. He says that replacing the cylinder would cost as much as a new gun. I have a few questions.
If I need to replace the cylinder, what might that cost me including labor?
That Does a Uberti cylinder cost?
IYO, I am I doing better to replace the cylinder or replace the gun?
What is a Taylor & Co .45 worth parted out?
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Call VTI or Taylors and/or visit their websites.  A new cylinder is just a little over $100.00.  I think that's cheaper than a new gun so I'm not sure what your smith is talking about.  What exactly is so worn on your cylinder that it needs replacing?  Got any photos?

Shotgun Franklin

The notches where the bolt locks the cylinder are rather worn. I'm not sure that I could show it on here. The gun has had rough use for about 8 years.

You didn't say which model you had, but try Numrch. Just usre the URL below, find your model and look up the part and order it. The have cylanders for the cattleman for about $130 and I'm sure you can get a gunsmith to fit it in for you for about $30 to $40. If you want to be really sure, order a new hand to go with it.

I will no longer respond to the rants of the small minded that want to sling mud rather than discuss in an adult manner.

[/quote Check Cabelas for replacement cylinders. They had them for C&B Ubertis for about $50. WM

I think your "smith" is shining you on.  I replace cylinders for my customers all the time when they manage to screw them up.  As posted by Pettifogger, try VTI gunparts.  New cylinders run about a hundred bucks and require a little fitting.  The come with a new bushing as well.
Even with the cost of the cylinder and if you were charged 50 bucks to fit it up, still a darn sight less than the cost of a new gun.

I'm getting a second opinion and looking for parts.

Howdy,
You might try gunbroker.  I recently purchased a new cylinder for an 1860 at 1/2 the price opf one from vti.

Before you spend any money at all, make sure the cylinder needs to be replaced.

Is the wear to the point where the cylinder will not lock up properly when the hammer is cocked?

Often there is some peening over of the metal at the locking notches. A good smith can true them up again. If there is peening over the timing may need to be tweaked a bit.

The other thing is you might be amazed how shallow the bolt actually needs to sit in the notches to lock up the cylinder safely. Only ten or twenty thousandths or so. I don't have Kuhnhausen handy right now, but I will look it up later. I have a lot of revolvers, both double action and single action. Some of them are over 100 years old. None of them has had the notches worn to the point that they won't lock up the cylinder securely.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Since I have a couple of Colt's I can also use to play, I would loose nothing by having a second 'Smith look at the gun if anyone here is interested?

A second opinion is definitely called for.

Tom, the gunsmith at Taylor's, fixed the gun with a new hand, hand spring and another bolt spring.
I'm waiting on it now.
