so i'm looking to get a new setup. i want 2 pistols, a sxs, and a rifle. and i have no idea where to start. so a few questions. also i would like to note, i would prefer .45 lc for the pistols and rifle, and i have around 2000 to spend. i have an uberti cattleman already, but cant find one to match it. so any ideas? my questions is what guage shotgun? what barrel length on pistols? are there any guns i should stay away from, due to quality issues. forgive me if this has been asked before,  but i am no good with wording searches.

Go here http://www.uberti.com/firearms/single_action_cattleman.php that'll give you all the current cattleman models available from Uberti.
I'd suggest a '73 winchester clone and a Baikal SxS.

Cape Fear Kid

ok i bought a gun guide, and here is what i have found. a matching set of stainless uberti cattleman in .45lc with the 4.75 inch barrels, a marlin cowboy in .45lc, and either a century arms jw-2000 coach or a cimarron 1897 in 12 gauge. and if i can find a club locally who does the long range stuff, i may get the uberti 1874 sharps, chambered in .45-70. so what do yall think?

Go to a couple of matches before you buy.  Cowboy will almost literally beg you to try their gear when you let them know that you are shopping for new guns.  The try before you buy it plan is the best way to figure out what you want before you invest.   ;D

Major 2

Where I'd agree with Camiell ...and she a Champion.

I also say for the Budget, you made some good searches.

The SS Cattleman are nice guns ( and good value )

The Marlin is also a nice pointer ( I owned one about 10 years ago ) I went 73 and have not looked back

I know something of the Century Coach Gun too ( I know two pards with them )
they are robust and tank tough, and at $300 you won't get hurt budget wise.
They are a hammer gun which I like over the Stoeger's hammerless & Baikal cocking levers was cost about $75-100 more.

I went strictly low-end and I believe that I got the most bang for the buck (pun intended). My two 7" EAA Bounty Hunter revolvers ($356.00 each + ship +transfer tax) and my Rossi mod 92 ($416 + ship+transfer) are in .45 L.C. (all three bought new). I have two shotguns, One is a Stevens model 311 ($300 + ship - C&R no transfer)and the other is a genuine vintage mod 97 ($325 + ship - C&R no transfer) I did all of the recommended mods to the two shoguns myself (parts and refinishing materials about $100.00 total). they aren't hard to do at all. In fact I completely refurbushed the mod 97. I was great fun to do and came out great. I will be replacing the spring sets in the revolvers and the mod 92, and I plan on doing that myself with the aid of the DVD available for the 92 mods. There is already a U-Tube video on replacing the springs in the revolvers. They are the same spring sets and procedures that are used on the Colt SAA. All in all I have under $1,700 invested. Don't be afraid to dive into these guns yourself. If you look around, read up on the guns a little bit, ask for a little advice and shop carefully, you can end up with a nice rig and spend a lot less that you may think. Google has a ton of "how to" articles and videos to help out as well.
I will no longer respond to the rants of the small minded that want to sling mud rather than discuss in an adult manner.

thanks for the help everyone. the uberti pistols i'm pretty sure about. i have a cattleman millennium, and the fit and feel is awesome. however, i plan on going to some matches when i get home (im a trucker),  and i'll see if i can find a rifle/shotgun combo i like. @Camille Where in the great north state are you? I live down towards the wilmington area. @bugscuttle ive been shooting tactical for a few years, and ive been doing my own mods for a while, so it's great to hear you dont have to be a master smith to work on these types of firearms. thanks for the info and telling me about the videos!

*UPDATE* Got another Uberti Cattleman ordered, and a Taurus Thunderbolt and a Stevens Coach Gun on layaway (got bills to pay). All I have to do now is get me some duds, and register my name (Saturday). Going to my first match Saturday as well. CAN'T WAIT!!!

Abilene

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but, uh, can you get your money back on that Thunderbolt?  If you had asked around, you would have heard a lot of horror stories on that one.  There's a gunsmith on the SASS Wire who has gotten several of them to run, but he's the only one I've heard of and it takes a lot of work.  Every once in a while someone mentions having one that works but they are in the minority.  Taurus has dropped them.

Getting another Cattleman to match the one you had was a good move.

Good luck!

Cape Fear Kid

Well after reading some reviews on the Thunderbolt, I went this afternoon and talked the shop owner into letting me try the gun out, since he has a range. I ran leadnose, semi-wads and hollowpoints through it. Never had a problem with factory ammo. However, it did have a problem a couple of times no hitting the primer hard enough on my reloads. Had to reset the hammer and fire it again to make it shoot. Cold be my primers, I don't know. BUT while I was shooting (I also was practicing with my cattleman), another feller came in to practice for a match tomorrow. We got to talkin, and he told me he had a Rossi he was wanting to sell, and that since I was new to the game he would let me have it pretty cheap. From what research I've done, $350 seems a pretty good deal if it's in nice shape. Only problem is it is .44, and my pistols are .45s. So I'm going to the match tomorrow, and he's gonna let me try it out after the match. Wish I had all my guns and I would shoot. Oh well. Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the 'Bolt.

Abilene

Well now, since the T-Bolt functioned fine with several types of ammo, maybe it is one of the "good ones".  I would suspect since it fired factory stuff fine, that your reloads either have harder primers (CCI?) or possibly were not seated fully (first firing pin strike seats them and second time fires them).  As for the Rossi '92, a lot of pards shoot those.  Sometimes they are finicky about OAL and feeding, but usually can be made to work okay.  $350 is not a bad price, but if you are looking for a .45, '92's in that caliber show up used fairly often.  Let the folks at the match know what you are looking for, might get lucky.  And take the guns you have plus plenty of ammo, most matches will have enough pards with extras who are happy to loan them out to newcomers.

Cape Fear Kid

Ok so you learn something new everyday. Didn't realize there was a difference in primers. I do use CCI, AND as I'm new to reloading, it could have been my primers weren't fully seated. Oh well. The Rossi was a lil to used and loose for my liking. So the search continues......

Howdy Cape Fear Kid, listen to Camille......STOP spending any more money untill you have been to a few matches to try out the different gear. The Cattleman are good guns and will work fine. The best rifle for the game is the Uberti Win 73/66, next is the Marlin, and then the 92. No T-Bolts, No Henry Big Boy, No Chapperal.......yes I know a few folks have one that works. We are having our Wild Bunch match this Sat. Oct 22nd at the Buccaneer Range outside of Wilmington. Come on out and we will have some guns you can shoot, leather too, just bring a belt in case we don't have the right size. We will be setting up targets Friday the 21st at 9:00am, come on out if you can and we can get in a little practice. Send me your e-mail so I can put you on our contact list. I'll PM you my phone number. Don't buy anymore gear, guns, leather...etc....till you've had time to try before you buy. Check out Carolina Cowboy for the clubs in NC/SC. Hope to see you soon, Good Luck.

Well guess I just went AWOL on this thread. Sorry about that.  I'm in between Salisbury and Greensboro Kid.  Jefro hooked you up with some good links for Carolina Shooters.  You'll find that we have some very competitive shooters in NC. ;D

By the way I don't know if you tried to register your alias yet or not but Cape Fear Kid used to be taken.
