I jest bought me a Pederosoli 12 gauge double barrell on Gunbroker.

I watched a feller on You Tube shoot.  One barrel he loaded using a thick paper wad in one barrell one sent down the tube after the powder then one after the shot.

The other tube was loaded using a shotgun plastic wad that looked fairly long.  Are they a special wads?  or would a good ole Winchester AA wad work?

What kind of wadding would be authentic?  Just using wadded up cloth or newspaper?

Above is the gun I think I bought.  Haven't talked to the guy about shipping yet, but I won paying $190.  I stayed up till midnight to be a thief in the night.

What kind of caps do they use?

I am stoked.

Yes, I belong in a Rogues Gallery of thieves at the Sheriff's office.  I have emailed the seller, but he has not replied back yet.  Perhaps a bit mad at himself for not setting a reserve?

My Pederoli came with a set of nipples for #11 caps and another set for musket caps.

Whoops:  I just had a post disapear on me!

Plastic wads will do to get started BUT YOU WILL NEED AN OVER SHOT CARD. Plastic in the load is not legal in buckskinning circles, but OK in SASS or NCOWS.  I'm not sure how The American Plainsman Society, TAPS, will rule?

The traditional system is the same as older shotshells.  Powder,Over-powder wad (1/8" thick), cushion wad, shot, and topped with an over-shot card.  They are available form many sources, but Circle-Fly is quite often the maker.

OR, you can buy a 12 gauge wad punch and work up any number of expedient wads in the comfort of your own homestead.

I have even experimented with rolled paper cartridges.  I can repost if anyone is interested.

Check out Circle Fly Wads.   I got some  fiber wads off of them. Those are the thick ones, then there are the thin over shot and so forth.   There are special plastic wads for black powder that are a plain cup without the base.  In the back  of Dixie  Gun works cataloge (Mine is several years old) there is information on loading. Supposedly Black powder gets so hot it melts the plastic wads and leaves residue on the inside of your barrels. I got a squirrel with mine a couple of years ago.  French Jack said it died of smoke inhalation!   They are fun to shoot. One hint a very kind gentleman gave me  was to always put the ramrod in the barrel that is not being loaded while you are working. That way you know you are not double loading one barrel, and nothing in the other.  Only when thru loading both barrels put it back in the lug. Make it a habit to always do this.  Celeste

Ewww good tip sure shot I was kind of worried about accidental overloads.   :o

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

No one has mentioned a load yet.  The tradition is to load no more than the same volume of powder as shot.  Commonly, but inaccurately called a square load.  it even gives better/tighter patterns if you load up to 30% less powder than shot.  The reccomended powder is FFg.

A useful powder load to give you to start is about 70 to 80 grains of FFg.  A useful shot load to start with is 1 to 1 1/8 oz. For CAS targets, as little as 50 grains of powder over 1 oz (more or Less) will do the job, but you might want to try those shotcups, either plastic or rolled paper like half a coin roll if the pattern isn't tight enough.

The proper definition of a "square load" is a shot column as high as the bore diameter of the gun.  To save everyone the trouble of working it out, a square load is very close to a light shotload for the gauge. For 12 ga. it is about 1 1/16 oz.

I talked on the phone to the owner of Circle Fly several years ago, when I started loading BP shotshells for CAS.He's good to talk to, and full of information on all things BP shotgun.
