Still holds true today!! 

We need to keep in mind the 1873 was both a rifle (albeit a low-powered one by todays standards).....but it was a repeater, same as the 1866, which improved upon the revolutionary Henry Model....but moreso the 1873 embodied the improved .44-40 centerfire cartridge having a brass case, unlike the typical copper casings of rimfire ammunition. - Better cartridge case, reliable primer and a bit more punch from 40 grains of powder.
