How early on short rifle ?

What would be the earliest a '73 short rifle (20" barrel) has been dated ?

August, 1882 is the date that the one I own was manufactured.
I checked The Winchester Book By Madis and the earliest one shown in his pics was made in 1883.

Winchester catalogs of that era only show rifles with 24" barrels so the Short Rifles would have to have been special ordered.
The first short rifle was likely made in the 1870's.

Thanks 44WCF.........I have two options,,ordering a 44WCF short rifle immediately or waiting for some 24" barrel versions to arrive at Taylors,,,which may be a few months.

I don't know what you want, but FWIW, Dixie gun works has Uberti 24" 1873 rifles in .44-40 in stock. I got mine from them and love it.

There are no 1st model 1873 Short Rifles on my list and it doesn't appear that any were made until the 2nd model was in production. This first one I show is #66524 (1881). It is listed as a 20" octagon, full magazine, plain trigger in .44 caliber. It is interesting to note that the very last model 1873 produced was also a short rifle. This one was a .32-20, serial #720610.
