Troopers:

I plan on shooting at least 2 GAF Musters next summer as a Span Am USV NCO.
Will the Beretta Laramie be close enough to look like a Cavalry Schofield?
And I've found a pretty decent Springfield Krag for the rifle.

The grip shape is different, but it's shape is the same or very similar to a Smith & Wesson #3, but the trigger guard is like the Schofield. I wouldn't have a problem with it. But to be certain check with Drydock.

Where did you find one? I understood they'd been discontinued.

Your Larimie certainly qualifies under our rules.  It may cost you points in field uniform judging as opposed to an issue weapon, but not much if at all.  In addition, the Volenteers were well known for using private purchase sidearms, so enjoy your Larimie!

Thanks, Drydock & Pitspitr:

I have only been to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd GAF Musters (Hell On Wheels, Cheyenne), but we did not shoot as GAF, just competing with our SASS guns in uniform.  When my old Pard, Missouri Scotsman, got this whole GAF ball rolling, we didn't get too intense on a 100% accurate uniform, although we all tried to.  We went and did a lot of Color guards and flag raisings, and the like.

Alas, I've NEVER competed in a genuine GAF Muster match due to my work schedule.  So please excuse me if I ask a lot of match/regulation/firearm questions.  I doubt that I will be able to be 100% accurate in my accoutrements by next May.

Are stages normally 10 rounds with a single handgun and 5 rounds with a rifle?  What about reloads?

Much obliged,
SFC Mustang Gregg

We're really not all that intense, you can shoot the Military classes and win them in cowboy clothes if you want.  Uniform considerations enter only into the calculations for the overall champion, which is awarded via a points system that combines class finish with uniform judgeing.  THink of it as "Style Points"

As for ammo requirements, a typical stage will run 10 to 30 rifle targets, with 3 to 10 handgun targets.  The last 2 grand musters have been run on a "No miss" format, where all targets are engaged until hit. No penalties for misses.  Knockdowns must go down.  This is at the discretion of the Match Director,  WCJ may not run his this way. I'd read Jerrys report of His regional muster for a good understanding.  A good rule of thumb is to carry at least twice as many rounds as there are targets.  You will notice we emphasize the rifle over the handgun.

Reloads are multiple, and your best chance for making up time is a fast reload.

::) Hmmmm. I'm not sure about that. There's no question that reloads do play a large part, but in a knock down environment the best chance for making up time might be to not miss. I can relaod my trapdoor as fast as anybody and nobody reloads their handgun faster that I can reload my Schofield ( :-[ humble ain't I?) but I seldom win my class because I miss too much.

One of the things I really like about GAF shooting is that it takes a complete skill set to be consistantly competetive. You have to be accurate, you have to be fast,  you have to be able to manipulate your weapons effeciently, you need to be able to shoot from more than one position, you have to be able to reload, and sometimes you need to make good tactial decisions.

Then if you want to compete for the Brigade Championship throw in a need for hisorical knowledge of uniforms. But Gregg, I should be clear on this, the uniform you wore at CSG (the one in your avitar) is completely acceptable. We try to be very inclusive rather than being exclusive. If you want to come and play in your typical SASS Clothes with your Sass guns we have a class for you. And never worry about asking too many questions. The only dumb question is the one you were afraid to ask.

Last year the Grand Muster in Texas was not all knock downs and there were misses that counted.  Each stage had at least 10 pistol and 10 rifle so you had reloads with both your pistol and rifle.

My mistake, I remember making up misses, but it may have been optional.  "No Miss" does not require knockdowns, but it does help.

In any case, you can expect multiple reloads, with the rifle emphasized more than it is in CAS.

Probably depends on the range where the match is held. The two grand musters I have shot at were similar to CAS stages, but the skirmish format we used at the Depatment of the Missouri Muster is a whole different game! There, the rifle really was the primary arm. I have just a 50 round(actually there's just 44 loops) mills belt, and it's really surprising how quickly you're reaching to the middle of your back, or farther, for shells for a reload. Probably I need to practice loading with left hand, too!

That sounds fine by me.  ;D
I like reloads.  It is a lot more realistic!
