I have done this (with another gunsmith) and it is hard to get proper aesthetic balance.
My opinion (take it how you like) is that a "full flute" might look best!

I didn't get specific......and I should have. I was talking about full flutes and Hoof is right half flutes some how just don't look right on most of the conversions. Half flutes are also much harder to cut on the equipment we have.

I'm curious about barrel lining. This is from Howell Conversions-

QuoteWhen ordering, please specify whether your gun is Uberti or Pietta and whether you intend to use it with the standard unlined percussion barrel or are planning to have your barrel lined to .357. For use in the unlined percussion barrel, we recommend you use a hollow base bullet or factory loaded .38 SPL 148gr HBWC target ammunition.

If the barrel is lined to .357 does that allow for .38 Special soft lead bullets other than HBWC target ammo?
A work in progress.

Once the barrel is lined you can use standard off the shelf .38 Special as long as the overall length of the cartridge is short enough for the cylinderand the Bullets are Lead. You won't need Hollow Base bullets

RTR my two sets of converted 1851's sport lined barrels. This way I do not have ammo just for the pistols and 38 spl for the rifle.

I left the gated conversions with full length barrels and my other pair with old style R&D non gated cylinder with backplates (i got two used for 200.00) are cut to 5 inches.

I load my BP ammo to be able to shoot out of the conversions and my 38 spl carbine loves the same length cartridges. i also use the original 51 Navy sights with no detriment - I have found no need for the dovetail front sight that some highly recommend.

Be careful with the longer length 38 spl bullets you will have to set them deeper to ensure they don't poke out the other side of the cylinder...

Thank you Raven and Pony Racer. How much does it cost to line the barrel?
A work in progress.

Raven

Barrel lining is $160 plus shipping and we need the gun not just the barrel.

Raven I got to watch my local smith stay very patient trying to explain needing the whole gun vice just barrel to another customer once...

I think the guy finally agreed...
