Early to mid war musicians wore the issue enlisted frock coat with the addition of lace piping on the front that corresponded to the trimming of the branch of service.Mid-war and later the sack coat appears to be used from existing pictures minus the lace trimming.Volunteer units often followed the pattern uniform that the unit was wearing with the addition of trimming to the front of the uniform such as Zouve units.Cavalry musicians wore the cavalry shell jacket with the additional trim.Looking at period pictures it appears that a great deal of latitude was used in band uniforms as far as uniformity was concerned.
