Deadeye....they are both excellant leather....but with Herman Oak you have to order a minimum of ten hides....Wickett & Craig you can buy one at a time....W/C is also cheeper.

FYI - you can buy Herman Oak in single sides from several vendors including Montana and Oregon Leather.

Another source which I have started using is RJF Leather which comes in shoulders and backs as well as sides - it is excellent leather tanned using the old time pit method.

Thanks for that info Chuck, I'm going to check them out.

I don't mean to bash anyone but W&C consistency isn't what it was IMO. Even when ordering #1 grade it's like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. I've sent a lot of sides back and after the last time was pretty much convinced I was done messing with them. Out of three sides I was able to cut two belts out of the back of one of them, the others had so many places you would have wasted the entire side trying to get a wide straight belt cut out of it. You can insist you need good flesh or whatever and I just as well tell it to my dog. When I first started getting from W&C even the specials were awesome quality.

Don't know how those prices compare to those other suppliers but Weaver also has Herman Oak. It's TR grade but they have been very good about picking out nice pieces for me when I request it.

I'm positive I have more waste on average with W&C so the additional price difference for Herman Oak is made up for.

As for the original question, Wicket and Craig leather is just as good, what is good, but there is just so much waste if you need high quality leather for your products. I would have to give Herman Oak the upper hand when it comes to quality consistency.

Another bad thing about W&C IMHO they just wrap the leather you order in brown paper! I've gotten my order in and it had gouges and scratches in it from UPS!!! :o

I get my leather from W&C and have been very happy with it, no complaints at all, it comes wrapped in brown paper and is well protected in shipment, at least mine has been.
