grip enhancement

I don't mean your gun's grip, I mean the grip you have on your gun. It says in the rule book that you can use a piece of leather or a leather wrap to protect you hand from the heat of the barrel, but you cannot use a leather wrap or cover on the slide of your shotgun to increase your grip. Is it then legal or not to wear gloves while shooting? I don't really see the differrence between wraping the slide in leather and wraping your hand in leather. Would this violate the "spirit of the game" rule?

I don't know now but used to be if you shot any part of a stage with gloves you had to wear'm through the whole stage. They could not be padded in the grip. This may have changed.

There's your answer.  It's legal but no one does it.  The object of the game is to shoot fast.  Gloves don't help that process.  The only time I have seen a shooter with a glove it was only on his left hand to help prevent getting burned while shooting BP in a Henry.  Even with Henry's, 99% of the shooters will take the heat rather than were a glove.

Typing doesn't convey body language so please don't take offense, but have you even shot a match yet?  Go out, shoot, and you will learn a lot real fast.  Everyone out there is anxious to help out new shooters.

I remember one guy wearing gloves to shoot. They were very high with fringe on them. I don't remember if there was a reason he wore them other than they looked good.

A leather slide over the shotgun barrels like this is allowed. The rules were changed a few years ago to allow it because old SXS shotguns with original skimpy little splinter forends did not provide much wood to keep the finger tips from being burnt when shooting Black Powder. I have first hand experience with that with several old shotguns. Unfortunately the barrels on my current SXS are too wide for one of these, so I sold it to a friend.

I am probably the guy Larsen saw shooting the Henry with one glove on. I do it all the time on a really hot summer day. After 10 rounds of Black Powder on a 90+ degree day the barrel is too hot to hold. I NEVER put a glove on my right hand. Not with any sort of gun, no matter how hot or cold it is. Don't feel comfortable with a glove on my trigger finger. I do have one pard who used to wear big Civil War type gauntlets when shooting Cap & Ball. I think he did it mostly for the costume value. I ain't seen him wear them in a long time though. Probably realized he was not comfortable shooting with gloves on.

If you go to the Outlawed section at the end of the Shooter's Handbook, you will see that modern shooting gloves are specifically outlawed. These would include those with padding and grip enhancement. The pair of gloves I keep in my cart are a light weight pair of leather work gloves. No different than any cowpoke would have worn when mending fences. I wear them both on cold winter days, take them both of when shooting. On those hot summer days I wear one on my left hand when shooting the Henry with Black Powder. Strictly for burn protection, nothing more. Helps protect my tender finger tips from getting burnt with my old Stevens SXS too.

I have been at this for about ten years now, and I was never aware of that particular rule. But if the left hand has the glove on, it stays on for the entire stage.
