This is an odd one I know. A potential customer asked if I could carve something like a Paisley pattern or look in a holster belt combo. I know paisley when I see it, but I've not been doing this sort of thing long enough to have seen a whole lot of variation when it comes to carving styles.

Does a Paisley look for leather carving ring any bells? Thanks, JD

Are you just looking for a Paisley pattern that you can use?

Major 2

The name Paisley derives from Paisley, Scotland and is of Iranian, Pakistani and Indian origin.
It is an ancient design dating back to the Persians.
It's influence came to the West (Britain) in 1700's with the East India Company Trade where is was produced in Paisley, Scotland.

The curved Tear Drop shape might lend well to carving ....can't say to period correctness on holsters before 1900 though
maybe 1968-69  ;)

Yeah!   Amazingly valuable trove.  And there is still one more strongroom to excavate.  BTW, my favorit tie pattern after the various cartoon themes is the Paisley.

G'Day J.D.  If you google damask leather it brings up sites with patterns embossed in leather, you may get some ideas.Feathers

Thanks Feathers, I'll give that a try. It's sure good to hear from you and I hope all is well. Give me a shout via PM if you want to talk a bit

Wow, that's quite a site! They've got some great designs there.

OH NO, thats not that talking tongues stuff I read about is it?

I actually checked a couple of sites that I thought would have examples but to no avail.  Sure that I had seen this on leather recently I mentioned it to the wife and I think she figured it out.  She reminded me of the large 'throw pillow' covers that she gave me to discard about a week ago, they were the paisley design BUT most embarrassing of all!!!!!  Next she tells me to pull the bandanna from my back pocket, and shore nuff it is the same old paisley design thet  Wal Marts been selling me fer decades.  So now I know where them weird dreams is a coming from!   :-[

Well I AM a Pentecostal preacher, but I think that was just typing faster that I should without checking my work!

The site that feathers mentioned has some paisley embossed leather, and I managed to print some examples. I'm not sure how they will work on a couple of holsters and a belt.

I have a good friend who has done a ton of gunsmithing work for me without charging me a dime, so I'd like to make him a really nice rig. He asked about the possibility of a paisley style carving, but I'm not too sure that it would look good. I'm going to suggest some alternatives that hopefully will appeal to him.

When you shoot a lot it's good to have a friend who's an accomplished gunsmith!

JD - just my 2 cents worth but I would think that Paisley style carving would be very period appropriate.  Paisley shawls were extremely popular in the 1850s - 1870s.  As pointed out, many were produced in Scotland and they date it goes back further than that.

I have a Paisley shawl that my g-g-grandfather brought home to his wife from the Civil War - I would imagine he "liverated" it along the way from some house (he was in the 11th Mich. Cav.).  If it would help, I'd gladly dig it out of the cedar chest and take some photos of the pattern in it for you.  In fact, i think that I have two Paisley shawls that date to the Civil War era.

Perhaps if you had some photos of Paisley patterns, you could develope a carving pattern from them?  Send me a pm if you'd like some photos fo the shawl to see the pattern.
