Hi,i am lining a belt with suede and was wondering if it should be glued before stiching or just stitched?
What do you guys do and why?
Thanks

Not sure why you are lining it with suede but that isn't your question.

Suede is very flexible and tends to move around a bit. You might find it doing wierd and unexpected stuff if you do not glue it.

I would glue it.

I traditionally have used Barge cement for such purposes.  I have lined things with suede with no stiching... just gluing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does come apart after a time.

My massive stock of the original formula of Barge Cement has pretty much run out, and I have only used a little bit of the new, less toxic stuff so far

The original formula had a solvent that allowed it to soak thru suede sometimes if it was overdone. I only have a limited amount of experience with the newer solvent but so far it seems does not seem to penetrate so deeply. For many applications that is bad, but for suede that might be good.

So, if it were me, and if I was stitching it, I would most certainly glue it first, and I would have no fears about using the new Barge cement to do so. You can apply it a bit thick on the back side of the top grain, but still take it easy on the mating suede side, just to be safe.

Django,

I also line some ofmy belts with suede...and you have to glue before you stitch...suede stretches so the gluing is s must

In answer to the "why suede"...suede keeps the belt pretty much in place and prevents it from sliding down

Like outrider Said, glue it, or u gona be crazy stitching it. I've lined a bunch of belts
with suede, I oversize the lining and stitch it, then I clean cut the edges.

Something that I like to do with suede liners is add a second coat to the suede side after the first one drys.  Suede seems to suck it up and dry so fast that this old slowpoke can not seem to work fast enough and as said earlier, trying to do a thick single layer can cause its own set of problems.

Thanks Guys, i'll oversize, double glue and cut back as Bob & Bob suggested ;)!

Add me to the glue then stitch group.  I totally finish the belt and then glue and sew on the lining.  My last step is to carefully use and edger on the seude side.  Most of the time, I don't even have to burnish that edge.

Boothill Bob

I'll burnich the edge before glueing and stitching, then I cut the seude in a 45dg angle.
