The Old Model Bisley Vaquero and Vaquero are looking at new springs to bring them to a similar feel as the New Model Vaquero. The big issue is that they all see real world defensive carry and hunting use so the combination must be able to utilize factory ammo and reloads seamlessly. I'm very comfortable with a light trigger so don't let that limit your suggestion. Thanks to all in advance.

Please be sure to tell me about combinations that FAILED on factory ammo or were FEDERAL PRIMER ONLY propositions. TVM.

Your comments about the idea...good or bad...are appreciated. Don't be shy...please.

Thanks to all the voters!

TDS:

I have heard Pards say that some pistol primers (WW's) are harder to ignite.
So far I have never seen any that would not go off with the 17# Wolff or Bullseye hammer springs.

I am speaking of SASS main match revolvers, not self defense guns.  I don't know if I would recommend a lighter hammer or trigger spring for a self defense mod.   :o  Definately no reloads for self defense.   :-X

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Thanks for posting the poll.

I'm going to go for 19/30 to start and see how big of an improvement it makes. I hear the 17/30 crowd, but 19 is the lightest in the kits I have. Reliability is first and foremost in matches and life. I have too many second places to show for clicks where bangs were called for.  I follow Frank James in wanting to get results when I fight.

I would never ever use a competition gun for self-defense or hunting.  I'm not sure what poundage I use since I just use spring stock and customize the hammer and trigger pull on each gun.  My competition guns are LIGHT.

Why not? You're familiar enough with it to shoot it with your eyes closed. If it ever comes up in court the action work was done to enhance reliability and improve the accuracy of the weapon. You shot to stop the threat. Cocking the hammer manually is the only way to make the weapon ready to fire. You evaluated the threat before each and every shot applying only the necessary force to protect yourself from death or grievous bodily harm. It's not like you didn't give fair warning to what was coming. The sound of the hammer locking back as you command them to stop is internationally recognizable as, "Boy, you're in a heap of trouble!" You're able to transcend any language barrier and your ability to follow through escapes question should you be able to convince the sinner to stay a while longer in this world and wait for the police.

Light is good until the moment your gun breaks and the replacement isn't so light.

Glad you are an expert on the legal system.

Light is good until the moment your gun breaks and the replacement isn't so light.

That's why they are called competition guns.

I'm most certainly not an expert on the legal system. I don't think you are either, but then again, as we're not acquainted with one another it'd be foolish of me to make assumptions. In order to get to the legalities of it, you must first live through the fight and a slicker sixgun helps. I've got my mind made up how I'm going to do it and if it doesn't suit you happy trails.

I was referring to becoming so accustomed to a light action that you can no longer effectively manipulate a heavier one. I know about dainty competition guns and the stupid look on the operators face when they fail to function as intended. Been there, done that, and learned better of it.

Thanks for all the input. The springs were changed out today and the Bisley got a new checkered walnut gunfighter grip. Many thanks for the input. At 19/30 they are freakishly light. I hope they shoot still.

I CCW all the time.  I have carried SA revolvers in the past, but found I have better "into action" time with any of my 1911A1's carried in Condition 1.
I also put only with factory ammo in my CCW's.  No reloads for me.  :o

And I do reload (for SASS, NRA HP, IHMSA, BR, etc).

Oh how I love the 1911. I don't shoot it well except highly enhanced. I like the Vaquero for its point ability and heavy frame to tolerate the self defense loads in .45lc. Hornady Leverlution for now. Seems good enough and it is not just an ACP bullet pressed into service. Agreed on no reloads for liability reasons. Corbon and Buffalo make it unnecessary. I haven't found a reason to go hog wild on the pistol. Especially if you carry a long gun in the vehicle. I'm not walking into Mogadishu, but Clint Smith seems wise enough.
