I have a M1860 Carbine that has the barrel lined to .56-50, I think.  The problem is that the inside of the hammer face looks to be wearing very badly.  Is this a common problem for Spencers?  Where is the best place to get a replacement hammer?  What causes this problem? I noticed that S&S Firearms has them but are said to be investment cast, does anything have to be done to these hammers before use? I am looking forward to running some live rounds through this carbine.  Thanks for any information.

Your hammer face can easily be welded up and recut flat. S&S cast hammers are nice, but they are "as cast" and need finishing. You will do a lot of filing and sanding, then it has to be heat treated. If you have the time and tools, it's not a particularly hard job, just a bit tedious.

You might try Ed Knisely  EDKnisely@aol.com He sometimes has original parts for Spencer's.

Any thoughts on if a Taylor Arms Spencer hammer will work on an original M1860 carbine?

I got a Chiappa Firearms Spencer hammer today.  It fit on without any problems.  The hammer was a little short but did reach the firing pin.  I did try it with a couple of primed cases and both fired no problem.  The hammer lots great and cost was $22.44 delivered.
