Good for you!

Use a good digital camera and a small, easily-read rule and you should have no problem reproducing that Marlin.

I have my eye on a couple 1888 Marlins but you may or may not know....they are not the easiest to find. I thought many years looking at the picture of the rifle that it was a round barrel but im not 100% sure now.  I have not been able to find ANY for sale with the round barrel but that is okay. When I actually see the rifle it may be octagon anyways.

Go to your Public Library and ask if they'll order you a copy of Brophy's book titled 'Marlin Firearms'.

You should be able to get it via an Inter-Library Loan.

Good Luck!

Rube,
A tip for not looking shiny and new, while not raggity?
Wash the pants, shirt and vest (not together if the colors are different) with a cup of bleach. That gives a warmer "been in the sun fer a while" look.
One word of warning? It faded a vest and trouser set of mine turn to an almost rust color.(see the vest in my profile picture)
Been dealing with WWM for 5 years and have ALWAYS had good results.

Better to just wash them and wear them and dry them outdoors.

Any artificial aging looks artificial because of the 'total' aging of the garment.

Real colors don't fade uniformly.

Also - be sure you're using natural fabric - wool, cotton, linsey-woolsey, silk, etc - no modern poly fibers or threads.

You'll have a better, more natural 'hang' to the clothing when worn.

Good Luck!

I agree with St George, wear the clothes and wash them oftem, they will look right.

Also something most don't think about, but back to "wear them often"  nothing looks totally out of place than someone trying to convince you that they are a person from a certain period, yet you can tell they are uncomfortable wearing the clothes, either from the fact they don't fit and feel like modern clothes or they are self consience of the fact somebody might notice them and think they look weird.

OK maybe you can't wear them to work like I can, but you can wear them elsewhere, only dress code I've ever seen at a mall or grocery store was shoes and shirts.  Wear them, get used to them, if someone stares at you because of it, so what, look at them, most times they look funnier than you, myself I find it's all of the time, never had anyone stare at me that didn't look real funny themselves.  No not the weird dressed kids, they understand being different.  It's the guy that's over weight with shorts and a tank top and sandles with socks that it happens most often with.

I understand this totally. I have never really cared too much about what people think. I will get my stuff and wear and wash it often.

Been looking at this rifle for a couple months now. Condition def turns me off of this gun. I have also been looking at another one which has been restored and is in much nicer condition for just a tad bit more. Rube's gun was in 38-40 and I may hold out for one of those in the future.

The caliber would be an issue.  I had thought that this one might be a good project gun.  Keep us updated on your progress--this is interesting.

Just thought I would share with you some of the things I visited this weekend.

Here is the actual rifle that you seen in that picture of Rube in his coffin.

Here is the last "unfired" bullet taken out of his revolver.

Another of the pictures

This is where Rube was actually killed at.

Hope you enjoy the pics.
